It is a matter of time, at 2 o’clock in the night, 27 year old American singer Mia Zapata was going home from her friend’s flat. She booked a taxi and said goodbye to her friend and left. But after some time his dead body was found lying on the road.

As early as the morning, Mia’s friends were continuously calling her for singing rehearsal, but no response was received. During this time, he got the information that Mia was no more in this world.

Medical examination revealed that Mia was first raped, then brutally beaten and then strangulated to death. This incident spread outrage across America and the pressure on the police to solve the case continued to increase.

During the investigation, a sample of saliva was found from Mia’s body, but at that time DNA technology was not so developed that the culprit could be identified immediately. In such a situation, this case went into cold storage of the police.

After 11 years, when DNA technology improved, Mia’s case was re-examined and the culprit was found, which shocked everyone.

Today in Chapter 3 of Ansuni Dastanen, read the story of American singer Mia Zapata, who was raped and murdered…

Mia Zapata was born on August 25, 1965 in America. She was the youngest of three children. His brother’s name was Eric and sister’s name was Kristen. His parents Donna and Richard Zapata worked in the TV industry.

Mia was very fond of singing since childhood. He learned to play guitar and piano at the age of only 9. Mia would always record her voice on a tape recorder and then after listening to it, would change and improve the lyrics of her songs.

Mia did her schooling from a Catholic school, where the rules were very strict. Students had to wear uniform and follow time. But Mia did not follow any of these rules. His teachers used to complain to his parents that he was difficult to handle. But Mia loved spending time with people who loved music. Instead of going to expensive parties, she preferred to sit in cheap cafes and sing songs.

In 1984, Mia Zapata began studying liberal arts at Antioch College. There Mia met Matt Dresner, Andy Kessler and Steve Moriarty. The four soon became good friends and in September 1986 they formed a rock band called The Gits.

In 1989, they all moved to Seattle, USA. Mia took a job at a bar there and the four friends started living together in a house, which they named The Rate House. Gradually the band started making its own identity and its main singer was Mia.

The Gits recorded a few songs between 1990–91 and released them through small, local record companies. There was a magic in Mia’s voice and the real identity of this band was also in Mia’s name. As the band started becoming famous, the demand for their concerts also started increasing.

In 1992 the band released their debut album Fighting the Bully. Through this song Mia got recognition all over America. People started liking him. Now the band was planning to tour in America and Europe. Apart from this there were also concerts. The entire team along with Mia was very happy that their hard work started paying off.

Not only this, the band prepared its second album Enter: The Conquering Chicken, which was about to be released. But before its release something happened which no one had even imagined.

On the night of July 6, 1993, Mia rehearsed the song with a friend, and then on July 7, she stayed at her friend’s house, the Comet Tavern, in Capitol Hill. There he partied with his friends. There were many people in that party who knew Mia very well.

At midnight Mia said she was going to her boyfriend’s. But instead she went to a friend’s apartment in the Comet Tavern building and stayed there for about an hour.

Then at around 2 o’clock Mia started going back home. He called a taxi. But no one knew whether Mia came out of the building or not. Not only this, no record of him was found with any taxi company. At that time none of the cameras installed in the area were working.

Meanwhile, at around 3:20 in the night, a woman saw a dead body of a person lying near the building and immediately informed the police. When the police reached the spot, took the body to the hospital and identified it, they found out that it was none other than American singer Mia Zapata.

Medical examination revealed that Mia was raped, beaten and strangled before her murder. But the saliva samples found from Mia’s body during the investigation were kept safe by the police team, because in 1993, DNA technology was not so developed that criminals could be identified immediately from saliva or other evidence.

On the other hand, all Mia’s friends were waiting for her singing rehearsal. He called several times, but received no response. During this time he came to know that Mia was no more in this world and she had been murdered.

The news of Mia’s death shocked everyone. Within no time this news spread across America in a single day. Not only this, it was also claimed that when Mia’s body was found, its shape was as if she had spread her arms. Some people called it a mere coincidence, while others said that there must be a hidden story of murder behind it. However, official files never confirmed this.

Now many questions started arising in the minds of Mia’s group members as to who could be behind this. The police had no evidence, no witnesses and no taxi records were found. The only evidence in question were saliva samples, which had no special significance at that time.

Apart from this, there were many questions as to what happened in those 80 minutes. Through which door did Mia go out and why was no trace of her found after that? And then what happened that Mia was raped, beaten and then strangulated to death.

Hundreds of people were present at Mia’s funeral. Everyone’s eyes were moist, but the desire for justice was in everyone’s heart. In such a situation, the atmosphere of Seattle changed at that time. Where earlier people used to roam around without any worries, now fear and doubt started troubling people.

The police were continuously investigating the matter. Mia’s boyfriend, band mates, and Capitol Hill friends were all questioned. But no one came under suspicion. Mia’s death was becoming an unsolved mystery. Even the police were not able to understand in which direction the investigation should proceed.

A few months after Mia’s death, some women came forward claiming that a man used to stalk them near the Comet Tavern building. A woman also noted down the number of that person’s car. When the police started investigation, it was found that this license plate was registered in the name of Jesus Mejia.

But in 1993, the police had no concrete allegations to put Jesus Mejia under suspicion. After this, no action was taken on this case for 10 years. For many years, the file of Mia’s case remained in the cold storage of the police department.

The only hope the police had was the saliva sample taken from Mia’s body. This specimen was kept safe in a cupboard for years. Then in late 2002, Washington State’s Cold Case Unit began matching old DNA samples to the new CODIS database. This database contained the DNA of people who had previously been caught in a crime.

Mia’s sample was also put into the computer again. Then something happened that suddenly some clue was found in Mia’s case, which was lying in cold storage for years. The police now had the evidence that led to the identification of Mia’s culprit and he was none other than Jesus Mejia. This was the same person against whom the women had complained of stalking. Many cases were already registered against him.

He also lived in Seattle for some time in the early 1990s. In January 2003, Jesus Mejia was arrested in Miami and brought to Seattle. After his arrest, Jesus clearly denied murdering Mia. However, DNA proved that Mia was raped by Jesus. But due to his continued denial, many questions related to the murder still remained unresolved.

Then in March 2004, almost 11 years later, a jury convicted Jesus of Mia’s murder. He was sentenced to 37 years. The court said that we neither needed witnesses, nor fingerprints, nor cameras. For us, only DNA evidence was enough, which proved that Jesus had not only raped Mia but also murdered her. After this, Jesus remained in jail till 2021, where he died.
