ITR Refund Delay: 5 Major Reasons Your Tax Refund May Be Held Up This Year

Last Updated:November 26, 2025, 12:23 IST

Your ITR refund stuck? A single error, from a wrong bank detail to a mismatch in your return, can freeze the entire process, leaving taxpayers waiting far longer than expected

Pending tax dues or failed e-verification can hold up refunds.

Millions of taxpayers across the country who are still awaiting their income tax refund often find themselves asking the same question: why has it not arrived yet? Even a small error can halt the refund process. Simple mistakes such as incorrect bank details or a wrong PAN number can stop the refund instantly. As a result, many refunds are delayed each year.

The most common reason for refund delays is inaccurate information in the income tax return. If your bank account number, IFSC code, PAN, or address is wrong, the Income Tax Department cannot issue the refund.

In such cases, the return cannot be processed further until the correct details are updated, which is where delays begin.

Extra Scrutiny For High-Value Or Suspicious Returns

If a return claims a large refund or shows mismatched information, the department carries out manual verification. Refunds exceeding Rs 1 lakh, income from foreign sources, capital gains, or returns involving several income streams often undergo additional checks.

The refund is released only after the claim is confirmed to be valid.

Closed Bank Account Or Failed Pre-Validation

Refunds are credited only to active bank accounts that have been pre-validated on the portal. If an account is closed, inactive, or the pre-validation fails, the refund is automatically withheld.

Taxpayers must update their bank details and complete the pre-validation again.

Pending Tax Demands Or Delay In E-Verification

If you have outstanding tax dues, the department will release the refund only after the dues are cleared. Similarly, if e-verification is not completed within 30 days of filing the ITR, the return will not be processed.

Any delay in e-verification directly results in a delay in receiving the refund.

Mismatch, Errors, Or Section 154 notices

If there is a significant mistake in the return or the information does not match Form 26AS, AIS, or TIS, the refund is held back. In some cases, the ITR may even be marked as ‘defective’, delaying processing until it is corrected.

Occasionally, large refunds may also face short-term financial delays at the department’s end.

How To Check Your Refund Status

Simple returns such as ITR-1 and ITR-4 are usually processed faster. If your refund is delayed, log in to the e-Filing portal and check the status under ‘View Filed Returns’.

If any notice, pending action, or mismatch appears, it is important to rectify it promptly.
