India is set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, marking a major milestone for Indian sport and paving the way for a potential Olympic bid in 2036.

India’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games is set to be formally approved on Wednesday at the Commonwealth Sport’s General Assembly in Glasgow. This event marks a significant step in India’s ambitious plan to become a global multi-sport hub.
The last time India hosted the Games was in 2010 in Delhi. This time, the event is set to be held in Ahmedabad, a city that has significantly upgraded its sports infrastructure over the past decade.
Wednesday’s General Assembly will confirm the recommendation by the Commonwealth Sport’s Board, a decision that followed an assessment by the Commonwealth Sport’s Evaluation Committee. This committee evaluated the candidate cities based on technical delivery, athlete experience, infrastructure, governance, and alignment with Commonwealth Sport values.
India’s bid for the 2030 Games faced competition from Abuja, Nigeria. However, Commonwealth Sport decided to consider Nigeria for the 2034 edition after developing a strategy to support and accelerate its hosting ambitions.
During the Assembly, representatives from across the Commonwealth will make the final decision regarding the host of the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030. India will present its vision for the Games in Ahmedabad, and a unique broadcast moment will follow the confirmation of the recommendation.
When Is Announcement?
A formal announcement is expected around 6:30 pm (IST). India will be represented by Joint Secretary (Sports) Kunal, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P T Usha, and Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi, among others.
This decision will be a pivotal moment for the future of the Commonwealth Sport Movement and a significant chapter in its 100-year history. Hosting the Games would be a major milestone in India’s quest to host the Olympics in 2036, also proposed to be held in Ahmedabad.
Interim President of Commonwealth Sport, Dr Donald Rukare, stated that the Executive Board found proposals from both India and Nigeria “inspiring” but ultimately chose Ahmedabad for 2030.
Recently, Ahmedabad has hosted several international sporting events, including the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, the Asian Aquatics Championships, and the AFC Under-17 Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers. Next year, it will host the Asian Weightlifting Championship and Asia Para-Archery Cup, and in 2029, the World Police and Fire Games will be held in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Ekta Nagar.
The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave is one of the main venues currently under development. In addition to the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, which has a capacity of over 100,000, the enclave will include an aquatics centre, a football stadium, and two indoor sports arenas. An athletes’ village capable of housing 3,000 athletes is also being constructed within this complex.
India promises grandeur for the 2030 Games, in contrast to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which has been scaled down to prevent budget overruns. Glasgow’s budget is set at a modest 114 million pounds (over Rs 1,300 crore), and some major disciplines like wrestling, shooting, badminton, and hockey have been excluded from the 10-sport roster. India opposed this reduction as it affected its medal prospects.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has assured that the 2030 Games will feature an extensive programme, including all the disciplines omitted by Glasgow. The plan is to include medal-earning sports like shooting, archery, and wrestling, as well as traditional sports like kabaddi and kho kho.
Commonwealth Sport acknowledged India’s proud sporting history and strong record of Commonwealth Games success, noting that India finished fourth on the medal table at Birmingham 2022. Ahmedabad’s proposal highlights India’s commitment to Commonwealth values and its capacity to stage a Games that reflects the scale and diversity of modern sport.
