Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday said US President Donald Trump’s 28-point peace plan that is more favourable to Moscow can be the basis of a “final peaceful settlement” in Ukraine, and threatened to seize more territory if Kyiv refused.

Confirming that Moscow had received the US proposal for peace in Ukraine, Putin told senior officials in televised comments, “I believe that it can be used as the basis for a final peaceful settlement.”

“In the course of that discussion, the American side asked us to make certain compromises and show flexibility, as they said,” Putin said in his remarks. “During the talks in Anchorage, we confirmed that despite certain complex issues and difficulties for us, we still confirmed that we agree with those proposals.”

The US plan envisages recognising Moscow-annexed Crimea and occupied eastern Ukraine as “de facto” Russian, also requiring Kyiv to pull out from parts of the Donetsk region that it still controls, all clear red lines for Ukraine. It also compels Ukraine to cut its armed forces size by half, while also abandoning key categories of weaponry and reducing US military assistance.

Putin Threatens To Seize More Territory

Moreover, Putin threatened to seize more territory if Kyiv rejects the proposal. “If Kyiv does not want to discuss President Trump’s proposal and refuses to do so, then both they and the European warmongers should understand that the events that took place in Kupiansk will inevitably be repeated in other key sectors of the front. Overall, this situation is acceptable to us,” he said.

He said Ukraine was against Trump’s peace plan, but that neither Kyiv nor European powers understood the reality that Russian forces were advancing in Ukraine and would continue to advance unless there was peace.

“The US administration has so far been unable to secure the consent of the Ukrainian side. Ukraine is against it. Apparently, Ukraine and its European allies are still under illusions and the dream of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia on the battlefield,” he added.

Trump’s peace plan for Ukraine also proposes that the conflict would be frozen at the existing front lines in two other Ukrainian oblasts — Kherson and Zaporizhia — effectively allowing Russia to hold onto cities like Mariupol and retain a land connection to Crimea. Ukraine has long refused to give up territory.

Ukraine’s Response To Trump’s Plan

Trump confirmed on Friday that his administration has set a deadline for next Thursday for Ukraine to agree to the White House’s plan to end the nearly four-year war. “I’ve had a lot of deadlines, but if things are working well, you tend to extend deadlines. But Thursday is it,” he told Fox News.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rebuffed the plan and acknowledged that he risked losing Washington as an ally but won’t betray Ukraine. “I will provide arguments, I will persuade, I will propose alternatives, but we won’t give reasons for the enemy to say Ukraine doesn’t want peace,” Zelenskyy said in an address to the nation.

“Right now is one of the most difficult moments in our history. The pressure on Ukraine is one of the hardest. Ukraine may face a very difficult choice: either the loss of dignity or the risk of losing a key partner,” he said, warning of a complete break with Washington.

Apart from Ukraine, its major European allies — Germany, France, and the UK — have also rejected key parts of a proposed US-Russian peace plan. The Ukrainian President also held talks with US Vice President JD Vance and plans to speak directly to Trump in the “coming days”, according to his office.
