Lleyton Hewitt, a two-time Grand Slam singles champion, intended to come out of retirement on Wednesday to play doubles with his 16-year-old son Cruz at the New South Wales Open ATP Challenger event.
Hewitt, 44, who was once ranked No. 1, won the U.S. Open in 2001 and Wimbledon in 2002. Although he officially retired in 2016, he has continued to participate in doubles tournaments in Australia and currently serves as the Davis Cup captain for Australia.
Cruz Hewitt is one of the three children Hewitt shares with his wife, former Australian actress Bec Hewitt.
The father-and-son duo were set to compete against Australians Hayden Jones and Pavle Marinkov in a late afternoon match at Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney on Wednesday.
