External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called on Russian President Vladimir Putin and SCO heads of government in the Kremlin on Tuesday. On the same day, Putin’s aide met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

During his brief meeting, Jaishankar conveyed Modi’s greetings to Putin and apprised him of the preparations underway of his forthcoming visit to India for the annual summit next month.

Modi, meanwhile, told Putin’s aide that he is looking forward to hosting the Russian President next month around December 5.

“Called on President Putin along with other Heads of SCO Delegations this afternoon,” Jaishankar said in a post on X, along with pictures of the meeting.

“Honoured to call on President Putin of Russia in Moscow today. Conveyed greetings of Prime Minister @narendramodi. Apprised him of preparations underway for the upcoming Annual India Russia Summit. Also discussed regional and global developments. Deeply value his perspectives and guidance on further advancement of our ties,” he posted later.

Jaishankar later represented India at the meeting in the Kremlin after their two-day sessions chaired by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. At this meeting, Putin called for enhancing the credibility and clout of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) as an association of greater Asia for economic development and cooperation among the member states.

“We all share a common goal: to enhance the credibility and clout of the SCO as one of the largest regional associations on the Eurasian continent, and indeed globally. And governments, naturally, have a special role in establishing concrete practical work and expanding the multifaceted cooperation of the organisation’s member states,” Putin said.

Earlier, Jaishankar had travelled to Moscow to hold extensive talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, as part of the preparations for Putin’s forthcoming visit to India. During his time in Moscow, he had met Putin and stressed that this preparatory occasion was highly important, with both countries looking to firm up a number of agreements, initiatives, and projects that will add more substance and texture to the “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership”.

The summit is expected to produce significant outcomes aimed at further solidifying bilateral strategic ties. The annual summit meeting between the leaders is a long-standing mechanism, with 22 meetings already having taken place alternating between the two countries. Russia remains a time-tested partner and a key pillar of New Delhi’s foreign policy.
