The Supreme Court has expressed concern over the incident of assault on two students from Kerala in Delhi on Tuesday. The court said, we are one country. Forcing to speak Hindi, making fun of lungi is not tolerated.

During the hearing, the court mentioned the recent incident that happened with a person in Delhi, in which students were forced to speak Hindi. He was made fun of for wearing the traditional dress lungi. This incident happened near the Red Fort.

The Supreme Court said that the Central Government should be serious about such cases of cultural and racial discrimination. The bench of Justice Sanjay Kumar and Justice Alok Aradhe said, it is sad to target people due to cultural and racial discrimination in the country.

Victim student of Delhi University

Both students are first year students of Zakir Hussain College, Delhi University. He was beaten by the police and local people. The court was hearing a petition filed in 2015. This petition was filed after the death of Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Tania in Delhi. The court had then directed the Center to form a committee. The committee was given powers to take strict action on racial discrimination, atrocities and violence. Also, it was asked to suggest measures to prevent such cases.

Don’t target based on cultural differences

During the hearing on Tuesday, Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, appearing for the Centre, said, a monitoring committee has been formed. Now there is nothing left in the petition. Petitioner’s lawyer Gachangpau Gangmei opposed this. He said, incidents of discrimination and exclusion against the people of North-East are still happening. The bench said, ‘We read in the newspaper that a Kerala resident in Delhi had to face ridicule for wearing a lungi. this is unacceptable. We live together. No one should be targeted on the basis of cultural differences.

Center was instructed to file report

The court has already passed many orders in this petition. On May 1, 2023, the Supreme Court had directed the Central Government to file an updated status report on the functioning of the Monitoring Committee constituted in 2016. This committee was formed to monitor complaints of racial discrimination and insults.
