The Pakistani Parliament has amended the Constitution to make Army Chief Asim Munir the head of the three armies. Now he will be made the country’s first Chief of Defense Forces (CDF). It will be like the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) of India.

This new post has been created so that the Army, Navy and Air Force can work together better and the command of all three can be handled from one place.

Earlier, after Operation Sindoor, on May 20 this year, he was promoted from Army Chief to Field Marshal.

The 27th Constitution Amendment Bill was introduced in the Parliament of Pakistan on Saturday. This is related to the change in Article 243 of the Constitution. In this, 5 major changes related to the Armed Forces are being made.

  1. The President will now appoint both the Army Chief and the Chief of Defense Forces on the advice of the Prime Minister.
  2. The Army Chief will also be given the post of Chief of Defense Forces.
  3. National Strategic Command will be created. Its head will be appointed by the Chief of Defense Forces on the advice of the Prime Minister. This command will be headed by a Pakistan Army officer.
  4. The government will now be allowed to grant special ranks like Field Marshal, Air Force Marshal and Admiral of the Fleet to officers. Of these, the post of Field Marshal will remain for life.
  5. The post of the present Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee will cease to exist after November 27, 2025.

Munir became Major General in 2014

On 25 April 1986, Munir joined the Pakistan Army. He was commissioned in the 23rd Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment. When Munir’s rank in the army increased to Lieutenant Colonel, then Munir got posted in the Pakistani Embassy in Saudi Arabia.

He has also spent a lot of time in Pakistan occupied Kashmir i.e. PoK. While being a Brigadier, he was made the Chief of Staff of Pakistan’s ‘I Strike Corps Mangala’. After this, he was made Major General in 2014. In 2016, Munir became the Director General of Pakistan’s Military Intelligence and rose to the post of Lieutenant General in September 2018.

Munir’s father had reached Pakistan from Jalandhar.

In 1947, Munir’s father Syed Sarwar Munir had reached Pakistan from Jalandhar in Punjab. Asim Munir was born in 1968. Munir has two elder brothers – eldest brother Qasim Munir is a government officer in Gilgit-Baltistan and middle brother Hashim Munir is a school teacher.

Asim Munir studied in Madrasa till seventh standard. After that his father was transferred to Rasalpur. Munir studied 8th and 9th from a school there. After this Munir took admission in Sir Syed College, Rawalpindi. Former Pakistan Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa also studied from this college.
