GenZ in Pakistan is demanding the government to improve education and provide basic facilities.
After Nepal, Bangladesh, now GenZ have come out on the streets in Pakistan against the government. This protest is being held in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) due to reforms in education, flaws in the e-marking system in examinations and lack of basic facilities.
The movement began on November 4 at the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir in Muzaffarabad, where students were protesting against an increase of lakhs of rupees in semester fees. However, one student was injured by a bullet, after which the demonstrations turned violent.
These demonstrations have spread from Muzaffarabad to Mirpur, Kotli, Rawalakot and Neelam Valley. Intermediate students also staged a protest in Lahore. The students raised slogans like Azadi and ‘Kathilon Jawab Do, Khoon Ka Hisab Do’ and accused the Pakistani Army of atrocities.

Students angry with university increasing semester fees by lakhs of rupees
In the University of Kashmir, Muzaffarabad, students were angry as semester fees increased by lakhs of rupees in 3-4 months. Intermediate (11th-12th) students also joined the protest, who are angry with the e-marking (digital assessment) system implemented at the matriculation and intermediate level.
Earlier on October 30, the 11th results were released with a delay of 6 months, due to which the students protested. The students alleged that they got very low marks due to e-marking.
At the same time, in some cases, passes were shown in such examinations for which they had not even appeared. The Education Board constituted a committee to examine the e-marking process, but there was no official statement from the government.
GenZ has 7 important demands from the government
- Immediate closure of e-marking system.
- Waiver of re-checking fee (Rs 1,500 per subject).
- The price of Rs 10,500 for seven subjects is becoming difficult for poor students.
- Construction of poor school-college buildings, libraries and labs.
- To overcome the shortage of medicines and doctors in hospitals.
- Increasing public transport.
- Stopping corruption and military atrocities.
The protest against inflation lasted for 5 days
There were protests in PoK in October demanding increase in electricity bills, flour subsidy and development works. This movement lasted for 5 days in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK).
This demonstration was led by Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC). The protesters were accusing the government of ignoring fundamental rights and not being able to control inflation.
JKJAAC had placed 38 demands before the government, including the abolition of 12 reserved seats in the PoK Assembly. The government accepted 21 out of 38 demands of the protesters, after which the protests were called off. 12 people were killed in these demonstrations, while more than 100 were injured.
In October, protesters threw containers kept on bridges in PoK into the river.
More than 100 people were injured in this demonstration.
Main points of the agreement-
- The cabinet will be small: Now there will be no more than 20 ministers in the PoK government.
- Merger of departments: Some government departments will be reduced by merging them.
- Tunnels in Neelam Valley: Studies will begin for two new tunnels.
- Airport in Mirpur: Plan to build an international airport.
- Education boards will increase: School boards will be formed so that education is better.
- MRI-CT Machines: MRI and CT scan machines will be installed in every district hospital.
- Health Card: Everyone will get health card in 15 days.
- Money for electricity: 10 billion Pakistani rupees will be given to improve the electricity system.
There were demonstrations in PoK many times before
There have been protests against the army and the government several times in PoK before. In May last year, people went on strike for cheap flour and electricity. People say that Mangla Dam in PoK produces electricity, yet they do not get cheap electricity.
Similarly, in 2023 also, people came out on the streets against increasing electricity prices and removing wheat subsidy. Even in 2022, people had blocked roads against a government law and raised slogans of independence.
