Mumbai Indians (MI) have put an emphatic end to the swirling rumours about their former captain Rohit Sharma being traded to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL).
Speculation gained traction on social media after KKR recently appointed Abhishek Nayar as their new head coachreplacing Chandrakant Pandit. Nayar shares a close bond with Rohit, having mentored and trained with him during his comeback to international cricket earlier this year. Their camaraderie led fans to wonder if a reunion in KKR colours might be on the cards.
However, MI’s social media team quickly shut down the chatter with a clever post on X (formerly Twitter). The franchise wrote, “Sun will rise tomorrow again ye toh confirm hai, but at (K)night…mushkil hi nahi, namumkin hai!” — hinting that a move to the Knight Riders was “not just difficult, but impossible.”
Rohit Sharma has been the face of the Mumbai Indians since joining the franchise in 2011. Under his captaincy, MI became one of the most successful teams in IPL history, clinching five titles and establishing a winning culture built around calm leadership and consistency.
The 2023 season saw a major transition, with Hardik Pandya returning from the Gujarat Titans and taking over the captaincy. Rohit, meanwhile, has continued to serve as a senior batter and mentor within the squad. With the introduction of the Impact Player rule, he has occasionally been substituted in and out of games — a move that reportedly fuelled rumours of internal friction, though nothing concrete has ever surfaced.
On the international front, Rohit recently retired from T20Is after leading India to a historic T20 World Cup victory in Barbados, where they edged out South Africa in a thrilling final. Earlier this year, he also stepped away from Test cricket following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, limiting his appearances to ODIs.
