Jashanpreet Singh, an Indian-origin Sikh man in the US, was arrested in Ontario, California, after he allegedly rammed his semi-truck into multiple vehicles, killing three and injuring others on October 21.
Reportedly, the 21-year-old truck driver was under the influence of drugs while driving. A video now going viral also purports to show Jashanpreet cooking in the truck right before the crash took place. The video shows a Sikh man driving a vehicle on a multi-lane highway while cooking curry in a pan. It then cuts to dashcam footage of a vehicle ramming into other cars.
Sharing the video on Instagram, one person wrote“Illegal immigrant truck driver caught cooking curry at 90 mph before crash kills 3 on California highway”.
But India Today Fact Check found that the first clip of the viral video is AI-generated. The second one is the original footage of the crash in question.
OUR PROBE
Multiple pieces of evidence prove that the video of the Sikh man cooking while driving is AI-generated.
1. The video contains the watermark of an X account “Vox_Oculi”, which shared the video on October 23, and captioned it: “WILD FOOTAGE: A second dash cam video reveals illegal immigrant truck driver cooking curry at 90 mph before killing 3 in California highway crash.” The account’s bio features the words “satire” and “AI Wizard” in it. We also found that the account had shared many AI-generated videos.
2. The video also has many visual inconsistencies, like the reflection in the side view mirror of the vehicle remaining static, despite the vehicle moving steadily. The stirring ladle seen in the video is also unusual. And in one of the frames, we can see the ladle get distorted. Apart from this, a passing by car appears to have only a single unpartitioned window spanning across the front and back seats.
3. The face of the driver seen in the video doesn’t match that of the accused, Jashanpreet Singh. A comparison can be seen below.
4. The US-based fact-checking organisation Lead Stories also debunked the viral claim. Attributing the California Highway Patrol Police, the news outlet wrote that the footage was not released by the law enforcement agency, and it was not related to the crash.
However, as per Lead Stories, the second clip (dash cam video) was released by the CHP, and it was indeed from the crash. Many news organisations also used it in their reports.
Hence, we concluded that the viral claim is false.
