Five-time World Champion Magnus Carlsen, who welcomed his first child with partner Ella Victoria in September, opened up on the seismic shift he has had to roll with following the birth of their son.
The 34-year-old Norwegian GM, reflected on the new era he has entered in life with the birth of his child, whose name the Chess star is yet to announce.
“You know, it’s different, of course. But I am certainly enjoying every moment of it and I think we’re we’re a very good team and we’re getting good help as well,” Carlsen said.
When quizzed is he gets enough sleep with the addition of the baby around the house, Carlsen revealed that the number of hours he gets to dose off now has reduced significantly, however, he has no issues getting by. He also touched up on the crucial support from his missus.
“Yeah, I was. I was today for sure. There was a you know two and 2 and a half hour gap, you know in the middle of the night but apart from that I’m managed to to sleep well and Ella is very generous with me,” the top-ranked player in the world said.
“So even though I’m obviously getting significantly less sleep than I was before I’m still getting enough to get by on most days,” he added.
Carlsen acknowledged that his priorities and preferences might vary following his entry inception in fatherhood, however, asserted that he wanted to continue playing chess at the highest level.
“Yeah, I still want to compete. I’m still a chess player and yeah I think both with with a little bit with age and also now with a different kind of era in my life, motivation will be going a bit up and down but I love playing and I think about it and my wife is very understanding.”
Carlsen also vowed to not push his child into the sport if he did not take to it naturally, but, added that he would certainly encourage his ward to explore the sport.
“I will not force anything on my kids when that day comes but I think chess is a great game and it’s fun and I think I will at least encourage my kids to test it,” he added.
