Trump Calls Canada PM Carney A ‘President’, Then Cracks A Joke: ‘Didn’t Call You A Governor’

US President Donald Trump had threatened at the start of second presidential tenure that he would want to “invade” Canada and make it US’ 51st state.

A snippet of US President Donald Trump’s conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the Gaza Peace Summit on Monday, in which he mistakenly addressed Carney as “President,” went viral.

The summit, held at Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh resort, brought together more than two dozen world leaders to formalize a peace deal between Israel and Hamas.

“You have Canada. That’s so great to have. In fact, the President called, and he wanted to know if it was worth—well, he knew exactly what it is. He knew the importance. Where’s Canada, by the way? Where are you? He knew the importance of this,” Trump said, apparently unaware of the error.

After the speech, Carney shook hands with Trump. A hot microphone picked up a brief exchange between the two leaders.

“Thanks for upgrading me to President,” Carney quipped.

Trump, 79, smiled and patted Carney’s shoulder. “Oh, did I say that?” he replied, before smiling and adding, “At least I didn’t call you a governor.”

The Republican has sparked a trade war with Canada with his tariffs while repeatedly making extraordinary calls for the key NATO ally and major trading partner to become part of the United States throughout the first part of this year.

Carney during his May White House visit said at a press conference that the trade talks were “complex” but that his discussions with Trump were “very constructive”

But he added that he had called on Trump to stop urging Canada to become its 51st state.

“I told him that it wasn’t useful to repeat this idea, but the president will say what he wants,” said Carney, speaking in French.

But this did not stop Donald Trump to again poke Canada weeks later, saying Canada can join US’ Iron Dome missile protection apparatus if it becomes US’ 51st state.

Canada had expressed interest in joining the missile system — plans for which Trump unveiled last week to defend against a wide array of enemy weapons — but had firmly rejected any loss of sovereignty.

“I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation,” Trump posted on his Truth Social network in May.

“But (it) will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!”
