US President Donald Trump on Thursday said he is “going to try and make a trip over” to Egypt to attend a ceremony marking the signing of the Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal, as Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi praised his role and said he “deserves the Nobel Peace Prize”.
Speaking during a cabinet meeting at the White House, Trump said, “I’m going to try and make a trip over. We’re going to try and get over there, and we’re working on the timing, the exact timing.”
He added that hostages held by Hamas in Gaza would be released on “Monday or Tuesday” and declared, “The deal has ended the war in Gaza.”
Trump’s remarks came shortly after Egyptian President said he had spoken with Trump by phone and told him he “deserves the Nobel Peace Prize” for helping broker the Gaza ceasefire deal.
According to a statement from Sisi’s office, the Egyptian President invited Trump to “participate in the celebration to be held in Egypt to mark the conclusion of the agreement for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip,” the first phase of which was signed during talks in Cairo.
Sisi also told Trump that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for helping bring about the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which many view as a potential turning point in the long-running conflict.
The new Gaza ceasefire agreement is based on Trump’s 20-point peace plan and includes the release of 47 hostages held by Hamas — 25 of whom are believed to be dead — in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. It also ensures a daily supply of aid trucks into Gaza and the return of displaced residents to the north. Israeli troops will withdraw in phases, with international guarantees reportedly backed by Trump.
The deal has received praise from several world leaders. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Trump earlier today. In a post on X, Modi wrote, “Spoke to my friend, President Trump and congratulated him on the success of the historic Gaza peace plan. Also reviewed the good progress achieved in trade negotiations. Agreed to stay in close touch over the coming weeks.”
The ceasefire is expected to take effect within 24 hours of Israeli cabinet approval, with hostage releases scheduled to begin 72 hours later.
