Thalapathy Vijay’s full name is Joseph Vijay. He is the head of Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam.
A bomb threat was received at the Chennai house of actor and politician Thalapathy Vijay. As soon as this information was received, the police and Bomb Disposal Squad (BDDS) team reached the spot. The team searched the entire house, but no explosive material was found.
According to India Today, the person who made the threat call was reportedly a resident of Kanyakumari. He called the emergency number 100 and said that if Vijay held any public meeting in future, a bomb would be placed at his house.
According to The Hindu, the police received a call at 2 am on Wednesday night saying that a bomb had been planted at Vijay’s house. After this, the police and BDDS team reached Vijay’s house at around 4:30 in the morning, but the team got permission to go inside the house only when Vijay woke up at around 7 am.

According to the police, the security guards said that Vijay was sleeping now and could not be disturbed. At the same time, after getting permission, the police investigated. After not finding anything in the house, the team left from there at around 7:25 in the morning.
Police have started investigating the matter and are trying to trace the caller. Security has been beefed up around Vijay’s house in Neelankarai, Chennai. The threat came after Vijay’s recent political rally in Karur. In which many people died due to stampede.
Even before this, threatening calls had been received
Even before this, on 28th September, fake calls had been received to bomb Vijay’s house. After which the police immediately called an emergency meeting and increased security.
The area was searched with bomb disposal squad team, sniping dogs and special machines. Security cordon was formed in and around Vijay’s house and entry of common people was banned. The Sri Lankan and British embassies were also thoroughly investigated. After several hours of searching it became clear that the bomb threat was false and no explosive material was found.
There was a stampede in Vijay’s rally
In fact, there was a stampede at Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu on the evening of 27 September. More than 40 people died in this. While more than 60 were injured.
A large number of people had attended the rally of Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam i.e. TVK. In which a 9 year old girl was missing. Vijay appealed to the police and his people from the stage to search for him, after which a stampede-like situation was created there.
Caught in the crowd, many people had trouble breathing and many people and workers started fainting. Seeing the situation worsening, Vijay stopped the speech and appealed to the people for peace. After this he left the speech and left.
There was permission for 10 thousand people for Vijay’s rally. The administration had estimated the gathering of 50 thousand people, but about 1 lakh 20 thousand people had gathered there.

Vijay announces compensation
After the incident, in an ex-post on September 28, Vijay announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh each for the families of those killed in the stampede at his rally. He also said that financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each will be given to the families of the injured.

At the same time, the Tamil Nadu government announced an assistance of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Karur assembly constituency MLA V.S. Balaji also talked about providing assistance of Rs 50,000 to each injured.

After the incident, police arrested TVK district officer Mathiyalagan and another worker. A total of five people, including senior TVK leaders Bassi N Anand and CTR Nirmal Kumar, have been named in the FIR. The Tamil Nadu government constituted a single member commission to investigate the incident.
Vijay commented on CM Stalin
Vijay released a video on 30 September. In this he said, “Is CM Stalin trying to take revenge? We did nothing wrong. If you want revenge then come to me. My party officials have been arrested by the police. I appeal to the CM to please not harm my party officials.”

On 1 October, Vijay postponed all political rallies till 20 October. TVK shared information about the temporary suspension of rallies on social media.
Madras High Court action
On 4 October 2025, Madras High Court constituted SIT (Special Investigation Team) to investigate the stampede at TVK rally.
The court also strongly reprimanded Vijay’s TVK party and its leaders regarding the stampede. Justice Senthilkumar had said that the actor and the party leader, who organized the rally, left the venue after the incident. Despite this incident which took the lives of 41 people, he showed no remorse.
The court ordered confiscation of the party’s campaign bus in the hit and run case. Based on video evidence it was said that this bus was involved in the accident. The court also directed the police to seize all CCTV footage of the rally, especially the cameras inside and outside Vijay’s bus.
The court had said that the rally organizers did not help those who had come to get a glimpse of victory and ultimately lost their lives. The court expressed dissatisfaction over the investigation by the local police and asked why no case was registered against Vijay. The court said that the government and the police were showing leniency towards TVK leaders.
Special Investigation Team and Supreme Court petition
Madras High Court appointed North Zone Inspector General of Police Asra Garg as the head of the SIT. TVK challenged this order in the Supreme Court. He says that SIT is biased and cannot conduct an impartial investigation.
Demand for CBI investigation
On October 4, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court rejected the petitions demanding a CBI investigation. At the same time, a notice was issued to the Stalin government demanding additional compensation. The next hearing will be held on October 16.
contact with victims’ families
On 7 October, Vijay spoke to the victims’ families through video call and consoled them. He said, “I am with you,” and promised to meet in person. According to India Today, Vijay spoke to 4-5 families on video call.
Hearing in Supreme Court
BJP councilor from Chennai Uma Anandan filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding a CBI investigation. A bench headed by CJI BR Gavai will hear this on October 10.
