A team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is likely to visit the site of the twin scooter blasts that took place in Kanpur on Wednesday evening, sources told News18.
As part of its standard operating procedure, the NIA examines any suspected blast site, particularly when the motive or cause remains unclear. The agency is in contact with the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), and coordination between the two is currently underway, the sources added.
The incident took place in the densely populated Mishri Bazar area of Moolganj, near the Markaz mosque. Two parked scooters exploded just seconds apart around 7:30 pm, injuring six people and damaging nearby shops. The sound of the blasts could be heard as far as 500 metres away.
Uttar Pradesh Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal confirmed the injuries, stating that two of the victims were discharged after receiving first aid, while two others remain hospitalised with burn injuries. The remaining two are under observation.
He added that the cause of the explosion is still under investigation and that all angles — including the possibility of a firecracker-related incident due to the upcoming Diwali festival — are being looked into.
“Since Diwali is approaching, we are exploring the possibility of a firecracker-related explosion as well,” Lal said, adding that a terror angle is also not being ruled out.
A bomb disposal squad, forensic experts, and anti-sabotage teams reached the scene shortly after the incident to collect evidence and examine the blast site. Intelligence teams have also been assigned to review CCTV footage from the area to identify any suspicious activity or suspects.
Locals described the scene as chaotic. Mohammad Uwais, a shopkeeper in the area, said, “We were sitting inside the shop when suddenly there was a loud blast. People were startled and items of shops were scattered all over the road.”
The explosions also caused minor structural damage to surrounding shops and led to panic in the busy market area.
