India on Thursday strongly condemned the terror attack at a synagogue in Manchester that killed two people and injured four others, describing it as a “heinous act” carried out on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

The incident took place at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall shortly after 9:30 am local time.

“We condemn the terror attack on the Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester, during Yom Kippur services today. It is particularly saddening that this heinous act was committed on the International Day of Non-violence,” wrote Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, on X.

“This attack is yet another grim reminder of the challenge we face from the evil forces of terrorism, which the global community must combat and defeat through united and concerted action,” he added.

The MEA spokesperson also expressed condolences to the victims and their families, extended support to the city of Manchester, and affirmed solidarity with the people of the United Kingdom in this moment of grief.

Suspect Shot Dead

The suspect, wearing what appeared to be an explosive vest, was shot dead by armed police within seven minutes of the Manchester synagogue attack, officials confirmed.

Assistant Metropolitan Police Commissioner Laurence Taylor, who oversees counter-terrorism operations in the UK, said the incident has been formally declared a terrorist attack. He described the assault on the Jewish community during Yom Kippur as “devastating.”

While the suspect’s identity is believed to be known, authorities have not released it publicly. Two others have been arrested in connection with the case.

Verified video footage showed the suspect on the ground as armed officers held him at gunpoint. When he attempted to stand, one officer fired a shot. Separate footage appeared to capture a Jewish worshipper lying injured outside the synagogue.

Greater Manchester Police initially withheld confirmation of the suspect’s death while bomb disposal experts examined “suspicious items” strapped to his body.

Hundreds of worshippers were briefly kept inside the synagogue as a precaution but were later allowed to leave once the site was secured.
