Palestinian militant group Hamas has elected its top commander in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, as its new leader. Hamas issued a statement on Tuesday saying that Sinwar will replace Ismail Haniyeh as the new chief.
Unlike Haniyeh, Sinwar remained in Gaza. He never appeared in public since he was recognised as a Hamas leader in 2017, but he had a strong hold on Hamas.
On July 1, Haniyeh’s residence in Tehran was attacked with a missile. Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed in this attack. This was confirmed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
It was under Haniyeh’s leadership that Hamas carried out the biggest attack on Israel in 75 years on October 7 last year. More than 1,200 people were killed in this attack. While Sinwar was its mastermind.
