Story of becoming Chunky Pandey from Suyash Pandey

Born on 26 September 1962 in Bombay (now Mumbai), Chunky Pandey’s real name is Suyash Pandey. His name is an interesting story behind becoming Chunky Pandey. Naini, who took care of him in his childhood, used to call him ‘Chunky’, because he was round at that time. Gradually, this name became prevalent throughout the house and people started calling him chunky instead of his real name. Later, he became famous in the name of Chunky Pandey.

Parents wanted to make doctors

Before coming to films, Chunky Pandey started taking acting training after completing his education. Chunky’s parents (Dr. Snehalata Pandey-Dr. Sharad Pandey) were a doctor, so he was under pressure to become a doctor, but he bowed towards acting. After failing several times in class 10th, he left studies and enrolled in acting class.

He took acting and dance training in Daisy Irani’s school in 1986. At the same time, he also worked as an instructor and taught dance and acting to many stars like Akshay Kumar. Chunky Pandey said this in an interview with Cyrus Brocha.

During a conversation with the Indian Express, Chunky Pandey spoke about the early days of his career and said how a producer expelled him out of the office. Chunky Pandey had said- there was no casting director or digital medium at that time, so one had to stand in long lines to meet the producers. Many times rejections were faced. Once a big producer-director went to office. He used to make romantic films.

The first film was offered in the toilet

Chunky Pandey made his debut in 1987 with producer Pahlaj Nihalani’s film ‘Aag Hi Aag’. There is a very funny story of getting work in this film. Which was told by Chunky Pandey in the show of Cyrus Brocha. Chunky had said- I went to a wedding wearing a churidar pajamas. I used to know how to tie his knot, but opening it was outside my bus.

I had to go to the bathroom due to drinking too much beer, but after going inside, I could not open my pulse. Standing inside the bathroom, making a sound for helping loudly. The people present there were laughing as a joke. But then a person proceeded to help, he was the filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani.

What was it then, with the opening of the knot, we became friends. We talked for hours. I told that I do modeling and looking for work in films. Pahlaj Nihalani told that the film has been made with Govinda. I was stunned to hear this. A few days later, Pahlaj called me office and the first film was signed for Aag Hi Aag (1987). After this film, he also gave work in the world of sin.

Farah Naz reported the incident that slapped Chunky Pandey in an interview to Filmfare in 1988. He had told that in 1989, on the set of the film ‘Kasam Vardi Ki’, Chunky Pandey teased him as “I am the man”, which he did not like at all. In anger, he slapped Chunky Pandey in front of the crew. Later Farah Naz also apologized for the incident. This incident was in the news at that time.

Chunky has been famous for skimp

Some interesting stories have come to light about Chunky Pandey and being taken out of the film ‘Tridev’. Bollywood’s famous director Rajiv Rai told about this in an interview to Indian Express. The director had told that he also went to his house 20-25 times to cast Chunky Pandey in the film ‘Tridev’, but Chunky used to debate again and again on the amount of Rs 1-2 lakh. Because of this, he dropped Chunky from the film, cast someone else.

Rajiv also told that Chunky Pandey is very stingy of nature and he is forced by his habits. He said that during the shooting of the film ‘Vishwatma’, Chunky used to keep only one cigarette with him so that no one could ask for cigarettes from him.

Salman-Aamir and Shah Rukh did not succeed in Bollywood

Chunky Pandey has revealed in several interviews about the reasons that affected their career that when big stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan came into Bollywood, the shine of his career faded. He had said this in a recent screen interview, in which he said that his career was going well in 1987 after his debut film ‘Aag Hi Aag’, but as these new stars got into the industry, they felt lost.

Chunky said that 1988 was his brilliant year, after which everything faded. Chunky Pandey also told that at that time stars like Ajay Devgan, Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan were constantly taking entry in the industry, due to which it became difficult to make their place.

Bollywood remained up his career

Chunky Pandey’s journey in Hindi cinema has been full of ups and downs. He made his debut in 1987 with the film ‘Aag Hi Aag’ and soon made a special identity with the role of Anil Kapoor’s friend in ‘Tezaab’ (1988). However, Pandey did not get that big stardom as the main hero in Hindi films, but his supportive and side rolls were more successful.

By the middle of the 1990s, his demand in films began to decrease, because at that time big stars like Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan were emerging. Because of this, Chunky Pandey turned to Bangladesh’s film industry to maintain his acting career, where he became an overnight superstar.

Chunky Pandey said in a conversation with The Quint that in the mid -1990s, when he was not getting great roles in Hindi films, he started working in Bangladesh’s film industry.

He told that he did not know the Bengali language, so his voice was dubbed, but despite this he became popular among the audience there. Chunky came to be called Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan of Bangladesh. He worked in films there for about 4-5 years and was quite successful.

Later Chunky returned to India again after celebrating his wife.

Chunky Pandey married Bhavna Pandey on 17 January 1998. Before marriage, Bhavna was a costume designer. The two met at a nightclub, where Chunky interacted with Bhavna and her friend. Before marriage, Chunky and Bhavna were together for a long time and kept dating.

However, Bhavna’s father did not like Chunky initially because he had an image with a cassoova and did not understand the world of Bollywood properly. But gradually they agreed and today the relationship of both is very strong and full of love.

New identity received from the character of last pasta

Chunky Pandey made a comeback in Bollywood in 2003 with the film ‘Qayamat’, in which he played the scientist’s negative character. He then acted in many films, including ‘Paying Guest’, ‘Housefull’ series, ‘Bullet Raja’ and ‘Begum Jaan’.
