PM Modi Condoles Nepal Violence Victims, Supports Peace Push In Phone Call With Sushila Karki

The Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s support in line with Nepal’s PM efforts to restore peace and stability.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke to his Nepali counterpart, Sushila Karki, and shared condolences on the loss of lives in the country amid the recent protest. The Prime Minister also extended greetings on the National Day of Nepal, which is on September 19.

“Had a warm conversation with Mrs. Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. Conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability,” said PM Modi in a post on X.

“Also, I extended warm greetings to her and the people of Nepal on their National Day tomorrow,” he added.

Nepal recently witnessed massive protests that claimed the lives of at least 59 protesters, 10 prisoners, and three policemen. The violent protests erupted in the aftermath of the government’s decision to ban social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, among several others.

Normalcy has returned to Kathmandu as movements of pedestrians and vehicles was seen on Wednesday on the streets of the national capital as usual.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Sushila Karki announced that those killed during the Gen Z protest on September 8 and 9 would be declared “martyrs”.

A national day of mourning was also observed on Wednesday, September 17, in honour of those killed during Gen Z protests. Schools and government offices remained shut across the country in view of the same.

Meanwhile, Karki was appointed as caretaker administration following the resignation of former prime minister KP Sharma Oli last week. Oli resigned following nationwide protests led by the so-called Gen Z movement against social media restrictions and corruption allegations.
