Tanzania’s Alphonce Felix Simbu etched his name into history on Monday, producing a dramatic dip at the line to win the men’s marathon at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

With his win, Simbu also delivered Tanzania’s first-ever gold medal at a world championships.

Simbu and Germany’s Amanal Petros were inseparable after 42 grueling kilometers, both clocking 2:09:48.

But the photo finish awarded Simbu victory by just three-hundredths of a second, one of the narrowest margins ever in a world marathon final. Italy’s Iliass Aouani secured bronze in 2:09:53.

“I made history today — the first Tanzanian gold medal at a world championships,” said a jubilant Simbu, who had previously won bronze in London in 2017.

Attrition in Tokyo Heat

Eighty-eight runners from 47 nations braved the stifling Tokyo morning, but 22 failed to finish, undone by the punishing heat.

On the track, Petros surged ahead on the back straight, seemingly destined for victory. But Simbu, second at this year’s Boston Marathon in 2:05:05, refused to yield. He unleashed a desperate final burst, closing rapidly as Petros tightened with fatigue.

In the final strides, Simbu lunged at the line, snatching glory by the slimmest of margins.

For Tanzania, long overshadowed by East African neighbors Kenya and Ethiopia in distance running, 33-year-old Simbu’s victory is monumental.

Defending champion Victor Kiplangat of Uganda faded to 11th in 2:11:33.

Petros collapsed in despair, but still found words of respect for his rival.

“I have never seen something like this in the marathon — both the men’s and women’s races came down to a sprint finish. It’s like the 100m! I’m sad I lost gold in the last three metres, but I am very happy also for Simbu,” Petros lauded.
