Dow shampoo, horlix and lifeboy soaps will be cheap: Hindustan Unilever released new prices after GST cut, saving up to 15%

Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) has cut the price of many of its popular products such as dove shampoos, farmers jam, horlix, lux soap and lifeboy soap. After this cut, the company’s goods will become cheap by 15%. These changes will come into effect from 22 September 2025.

Why did the company do this? The 56th meeting of GST Council was held on 3 September 2025 this month. In this meeting, the government decided to simplify the GST. The first tax slabs were 5%, 12% and 18%, but now the 12% slab was removed. This will keep only two slabs 5% and 18%.

Many food items such as UHT milk, cheese and jams were either exempted from GST or were put into 5% tax slab. Apart from this, GST has been reduced from 18% to 5% on soap, shampoo and tooth paste. The government clearly said that the benefit of these tax deduction is to reach consumers. Due to this, the company has decided to reduce the price.

The government allowed companies to change the MRP of old stock The government has allowed companies to change the maximum retail prize (MRP) of its old remaining goods (unusual stock) before the new GST rates being implemented from 22 September. Manufacturers, packers and importers will now be able to put new prices on old stock with stamps, stickers or online printing.

The Consumer Affair Department of India issued an order on Tuesday stating that the permission will remain in force till 31 December 2025 or till the old stock is over. With new prices, companies will need to see old MRP.

Luxury items will be taxed more Luxury items and tobacco products will now be 40% GST instead of 28%. Medium and large cars, motorcycles with engine more than 350cc will come to this slab. This can increase their prices.
