Dr. Pragya Singh, a government school teacher from Durg district, Chhattisgarh, has been honoured with the National Teachers Award 2025 for her dedication and innovative teaching methods. Singh has revolutionised the way children perceive Math, making it enjoyable and engaging.
Singh always dreamed of becoming a teacher. She began teaching neighbourhood children at a young age, but her education was interrupted following her marriage in 1997. Family responsibilities kept her away from her studies for about 10 years. However, she persevered and enrolled in a B.Ed programme in 2008, successfully clearing the Vyapam Primary Teacher Recruitment Exam that same year. She started teaching at Hanoda’s primary school. Two years later, she passed the middle school recruitment exam and began teaching at Hanoda’s middle school, where she continues to work. Interestingly, Singh holds a PhD in Geology.
Singh said she integrates geology with Math to enhance the learning experience. For example, she installed a rainwater harvesting system at the school to teach concepts like soil volume and curved surfaces. Her unique approach combines her academic background with her teaching, reported News18 Hindi.
A pivotal moment came when Singh was teaching triangles to her middle school class. A mentally challenged girl raised her hand and said, “Madam, look, I have become a moon.” This inspired Singh to make Math fun and accessible through games and activities. Motivated by this, she developed Teaching Learning Material (TLM), creating Math Park, Advanced Lab, Life-Size Ludo, Snakes and Ladders, Chess, and other engaging games. Through these activities, children began learning Math while playing.
Singh noticed that many children feared mathematics. Despite not receiving government funding, Singh remained committed. She financed the initiative herself, hired labourers, painted the school, and constructed a Math park. She also developed an advanced Math lab and made classroom learning interactive, using games like integers on the floor, chair races, dice, chess, and ludo to teach various Math concepts. Her efforts led to 100% exam success for her students, and her class remained full.
Singh’s innovative methods resulted in outstanding school results. Every year, students from her school excelled in the Gramin Pratibha Khoj exam, securing scholarships. One year, 4 children were selected, and 5 scored 100% in the 8th class exam. Villagers honoured Singh, and parents became enthusiastic about sending their children to school.
In 2018, a team from the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) visited Pragya’s school. Impressed by her Math Park and Lab, they recommended her for the National Teachers Award. Although she applied in 2019, 2023, and 2024, initial presentation issues hindered her selection. In 2025, she refined her presentation, impressing the NCERT jury and securing the award. Dr. Pragya Singh’s story exemplifies the transformative power of dedication and innovation in education. From a government school student to a PhD holder, she has shown that passion and hard work can achieve remarkable outcomes.
