Schools in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu will remain closed on September 5 (Friday) for Id-e-Milad, the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad. This festival may overlap with Indrajatra, celebrated in northeastern states like Sikkim and Manipur, where educational institutions will also observe a holiday.

While Eid-e-Milad is a gazetted holiday, meaning it is officially recognised by the central government, its holiday status varies by state. In states such as Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, schools, colleges, and government offices typically remain closed. In other states, the decision to close schools depends on the state’s discretion.

Moreover, September 5 is celebrated as Teacher’s Day in India. On this day, students usually organise programmes and activities to honour their teachers. Following these celebrations, schools may close for the holiday. Students and parents are advised to check with their respective schools.

In addition to Id-e-Milad and Teacher’s Day, several states will observe regional holidays in September:

September 12: Schools in Jammu and Srinagar may remain closed for the traditional Friday after Eid.

September 22: Rajasthan celebrates Navratna Sthapana, and schools may declare a holiday.

September 23: Jammu and Kashmir Will Observe Maharaja Hari Singh’s Birth Anniversary.

September 29 and 30: In West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, and Odisha, schools will remain closed for Durga Puja (Maha Saptami and Maha Ashtami).
