Kodinhi remains a mystery for scientists from all over the world, a small village in Malappuram district of Kerala. This village is called ‘Twin Town’ (twin village), as the birth rate of twins here is six times more than normal.

In the world, on an average 6 twins are born on the birth of every 1000 children, in Kodinhi, this figure reaches 40 to 45. More than 400 twins have been recorded in this village with 2000 families so far. Some houses are having twins from two to three generations.

Scientists took samples of DNA and saliva, but no concrete reason was found. Scientists from India’s Cellular and Molecular Biology Center and Tubingen University in Germany took samples of DNA and saliva of people here. In some families, the tendency of twin children appeared from generation to generation, but so far no special genes have been found.

Dual responsibility for raising twins

This journey is not easy for the parents of twins. The cost of everything from delivery to vaccination, clothes, studies and career in the hospital is doubled. Parents have a challenge to lack of sleep, continuous eye on children’s health and give equal time to both children. Nevertheless, they play it with pride and happiness.

Twin children have to face a mistake in identifying by teachers in school, comparison of friends and identity crisis. When growing up, society’s thinking creates difficulties for them even in decisions like career and marriage. Nevertheless, the twins of Kerala are now united.

Demand for subsidy: More than 160 twin couples have the biggest meeting of twins in Ernakulam, Kerala, the state’s biggest meeting was held in the state, which included more than 160 twins and ‘triple’ children. In this program, families demanded fees waiver in education, scholarship, job reservation and subsidy for the mothers of twins.

Being twin is now part of identity

From Kodinhi to Kochi, the twins of Kerala are now making a distinct identity. They have now become a social force. They are raising their voice through digital networking, collective programs and demands from the government.
