Air pollution in the country is no longer just a problem of big cities. The air of villages is also becoming equally poisonous. According to FICCI’s 2026 report, in 22 out of 24 states of the country, pollution in urban areas is more than rural areas. The natural protective shield of sea winds has also weakened in Mumbai. On October 21, Mumbai’s AQI was 165, while Delhi’s was 164. Mumbai was recorded as the fourth most polluted city in the world list. On October 24, its level reached 322. At the same time, the air of many small cities is more polluted than Delhi. The AQI level in Burnihat, an industrial area located near the Assam border in Meghalaya, was recorded at 101.1, while in Delhi it was only 99.6. Sea breeze stopped due to anti-cyclone in Mumbai. After the withdrawal of monsoon in Mumbai this year, anti-cyclone was formed over Gujarat and North Maharashtra. Due to this, easterly winds continued to blow in October and the cold wind coming from the sea remained weak till late night. Due to this, the sea breeze could not help in cleaning the air of the city by spreading the pollutants. The speed of sea and land winds is directly related to the level of fine particles. PM 2.5 increases as the sea breeze weakens. What does Air Quality Index mean? Air Quality Index (AQI) is a kind of tool which measures how clean and clear the air is. With its help, we can also estimate what harm the air pollutants present in it can cause to our health. AQI mainly measures the concentration of five common air pollutants. This includes ground level ozone, particle pollution, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. You might have seen AQI on your mobile phone or in the news usually in these numbers: 80, 102, 184, 250. What do these numbers mean, see in the graphic. ———————- Also read this news… Effect of weak monsoon – 33% crops destroyed in Karnataka: 4 farmers committed suicide in 7 days in Maharashtra, rice prices increased by 50% in Tamil Nadu.
