The 2025 monsoon season (from June to September) was up and down to India. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the entire country received an average of 743.1 mm of rainfall from June to 3 September, which is 6.1% more than 700.7 mm. Overall, the country is expected to receive 106% of LPA rainfall, which is more than normal.
26.7% more in the north-west, 8.6% more in central India, 9.3% more in the south, while in eastern and north-eastern it received 17.8% less rainfall. State -wise details are given below from IMD data. Excess rain benefited crops, but landslides, flood And also caused havoc. Total deaths are 500+, disadvantages are in crores.
State wise rain and impact: IMD data
State-wise status based on the data of IMD’s monthly reports and press release to June-September (till 3 September). The rain is given in % from LPA. Impact includes damage (deaths, crops, infra).
Himachal Pradesh (North-west, 26.7% more rainfall)
- 1200+ mm rainfall (30% more than LPA) from June to 3 September.
- Effect: Heavy devastation – 320 deaths, 23 flash floods, 19 cloudbukes, 16 landslides. 788 roads closed, NH-3/NH-5 collapsed, Manali-Leh highway debris. 2174 transformer damage, electric-water interrupted.
- Crop loss: 50000 hectares.
- Economic loss: 5,000 crores+. IMD issued a red alert.
Uttarakhand (North-west, 26.7% more)
- 1,000+ mm (25% more than LPA).
- Effect: 10 deaths, Flash Flood in Dharali-Northkashi, 19 NHPC workers in Pithoragarh. 75 roads closed, Dehradun-Tehri-Nainital Red Alert. A woman dies due to floods in Chamoli, property damage.
- Total destruction: 2013 like Kedarnath, but at a small level.
- Damage: 1,000 crore+, infra (bridge-road) affected.
Jammu and Kashmir (North-west, 26.7% more)
- 368 mm+ (20% more than LPA, 630 mm record in Udhampur).
- Effect: 34 deaths due to landslides on Vaishno Devi route, 20 injured. Tawi river bridge collapses, floods in Doda-Keshi. School closed till 3 September. The 99 year old record was broken.
- Damage: 2000 crores+, 100+ roads closed, crop-house drowned.
Punjab (Northwest, 26.7% more)
- 500+ mm (25% more than LPA)
- Effect: Beas-Sattruj-Ravi boom, 13 districts drowned, 3 lakh acres of crop ruined. 29 deaths, 3 missing. 1312 villages affected, 1.46 lakh homeless.
- Damage: 10000 crores+, roads broke. IMD gave an orange alert.

Madhya Pradesh (Central India, 8.6% more)
- 900+ mm (15% more than LPA)
- Effect: Mahanadi catchment affected, 50 deaths from floods, 1 lakh hectare crop destroyed. Waterlogging in Indore-Bhopal.
- Damage: 3,000 crore+, 200+ villages submerged.
Maharashtra (Central India, 8.6% more)
- 1,500+ mm (440 mm a day in Raigad).
- Effect: Floods in Mumbai-Raigad, 100+ deaths, 570 mm ghat areas. Crop loss: 2 lakh hectares.
- Damage: 5,000 crores+, train-road disrupted.

Southern State (Kerala, Tamil Nadu; South, 9.3% more)
- 1,200+ mm (10% more than LPA)
- Effect: Early in Kerala Monsoon (In May), 50 deaths from floods, Chennai-Bengaluru waterlogging. Crop-house damage. Damage: 2,000 crores+
North-Eastern State (Arunachal, Assam; 17.8% less)
- 800 mm (20% less than LPA)
- Effect: Drought -like situation due to low rainfall, but floods in some places (20 deaths in Assam).
- Damage: Low, but crop affected.
Other states (eg Gujarat, Rajasthan; Northwest)
- More than normal (107% LPA)
- Effect: Floods in Gujarat, 30 deaths. General in Rajasthan, but some floods/
- total loss: 1,000 crores+
Total impact and disadvantage: IMD data
According to the IMD, the core monsoon zone (important for agriculture) received 122% LPA rainfall.
- Benefits: Kharif crops are good, reservoirs filled (eg Bhakra Dam 95%).
- Damage: A total of 500+ deaths, 10 lakh+ affected, 5 lakh hectares of crop wasted.
- Economic loss: 20,000 crores+ (flood, landslide).
- Infra: 2,000+ roads-pull damage, electric-water interrupted.
- Health: Dengue-malaria increased.
- IMD notices 15 Western disturbances, which were associated with climate change.
IMD DG Mrityunjay Mahapatra said that 109% more rain in September will increase the danger. Extreme events (2,632 Wery-Havi, 473 Extrimali-Havi) have increased from climate change.
