5 Arrested After Tripura Student Killed In Racial Attack, Uttarakhand CM Assures Strict Action

Five suspects were arrested in the racially-charged murder of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old final-year MBA student from Tripura, in Dehradun on December 9.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami condemned the murder of a Tripura student in a racially-charged attack, saying the government was taking the matter very seriously and that one of the suspects, who is currently absconding, would be taken into custody very soon.

Angel Chakmaa 24-year-old final-year MBA student from Nandanagar in Unakoti district of Tripura, died after being stabbed during a racist attack in Dehradun. Anjel and his younger brother Michael were stopped by a group of men on December 9, who allegedly hurled racial slurs at them, leading to a confrontation at a local market.

So far, five suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of Anjel Chakma, Among them, two accused are minors and have been sent to a juvenile reform home. The police are conducting raids to arrest one absconding accused, on whom a reward of Rs 25,000 has been announced, and a team has been sent to Nepal in search for the suspect.

Dhami expressed condolences over the death of the Tripura student and reaffirmed that the government is committed to the safety of every citizen. He said such incidents were completely unacceptable in the state, and assured that the government would deal strictly with such anti-social elements. He also said that the accused involved in such crimes will not be spared, according to a statement from the CM’s office.

The Chief Minister has instructed the police to ensure the arrest of the absconding accused at the earliest, assuring that they will soon be in custody. He further warned that those who play with law and order should not expect any leniency from the government.

What Happened In Dehradun?

Anjel and his younger brother were accosted by a group of men, who witnesses said described the brothers as “Chinese”. Friends said Anjel calmly challenged the abuse. “We are not Chinese. We are Indians. What certificate should we show to prove that?” he reportedly said.

Moments later, the situation escalated. The men allegedly attacked the brothers with knives while continuing to abuse them. Anjel suffered severe injuries to his neck and spine. Michael was also injured and remains in serious condition. A close friend, who stayed at the hospital throughout Anjel’s treatment, said he was shocked by the violence.

Anjel’s body was flown to Agartala on Saturday. His death has sparked anger and grief across Tripura and other northeastern states. Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, chairman of the Tipra Motha Party, helped the family with medical support and funeral arrangements.

Student groups in the northeast have begun protests, demanding a national law against racial hate crimes. Student organisations in Dehradun have also started speaking out, calling for safety and dignity for students from all parts of the country.
