The three terrorists, who were killed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Akhnoor on Tuesday, may have infiltrated recently and had plans to carry out a major attack on an army installation, according to security grid officials.
The trio on Monday fired at an army ambulance that was part of a convoy moving near the Line of Control (LoC). One of them was killed in the evening. A four-year-old valiant Army dog, Phantom, was the only casualty in the operation, which saw the deployment of the National Security Guard (NSG) and Special Operations Group (SOG).
“Preliminary probe suggests that the three terrorists had infiltrated recently. They may have infiltrated 24-36 hours before the firing on the army vehicles,” a security grid official said.
The Asana, Sunderbani area is prone to infiltration via the Manawar Tawi river.
INTERACTED WITH LOCALS
Local residents have alleged that two schoolboys saw the terrorists enter the Shiv temple with their shoes on and had even objected to it. One of the terrorists reportedly asked the boys for a mobile phone and even checked their bags for it. “Either they wanted to use the mobile phone to use the hotspot or to ensure that the boys did not call police or elders. In either case, the encounter with the boys blew off their cover, pushing them to go undetected till they reached their planned spot,” an intelligence agency official said.
In the past, terrorists have used hotspots from the phones of locals to communicate with their handlers.
JAISH-E-MOHAMMED SUSPECTED
Police are investigating the identity of the terrorists, but agencies suspect the involvement of Jaish-e- Mohammed. Jaish, in recent times, has carried out attacks on army convoys in Jammu division. “All three are foreign terrorists from Pakistan. One looks like a Jaish commander,” an official said.

OVERNIGHT ENCOUNTER
While one terrorist was killed on Monday, two others were suspected to be hiding in the basement of a building in the temple complex.
The White Night Corps said in a statement, “After round the clock surveillance throughout the night, an intense firefight unfolded today morning, resulting in a significant victory for our forces. Relentless operations and tactical excellence has led to the elimination of three terrorists.”
Officials said that three terrorists, dressed in military fatigues, were carrying M4 carbines, and AK-47 assault rifles. SSP Joginder Singh confirmed the recovery of “a large quantity of arms and ammunition”. “The operation also saw the successful recovery of war-like stores, marking a critical step in maintaining security in the region,” the statement said.
