India will not have to wait till 2048 to become the world’s second largest economy, rather the country can achieve this feat in 2031 itself. At the same time, the country has the potential to become the world’s largest economy by 2060.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor Michael Patra said this in a speech delivered at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration on July 9. He said – Given the resolve to achieve its ambitious goals, it is possible to imagine that India will move ahead in the next decade.

India can become a developed country with an economic growth of 9.6% per year
Patra said that it has been estimated that if India achieves economic growth at the rate of 9.6% per annum in the next 10 years, then it can break out of the trap of lower middle class income and become a developed country.

Its impact should also be seen in per capita income. However, by 2047, the per capita income limit for a developed country will need to be US$34,000 (about ₹28 lakh).

Macroeconomic policy and financial stability in positive track
Deputy Governor Michael Patra said macroeconomic policy and financial stability are also on a positive track to internationalise the Indian rupee.

There is a need to align the inflation rate in India with the global inflation rate so that the internal and external value of the rupee can be preserved. This will prepare the ground for the internationalization of the rupee and India will be able to emerge as the economic powerhouse of the world in the future.

Inflation around the target due to monetary policy action
Patra said that due to monetary policy action and supply related steps taken, the inflation rate has come around the target of 4%. He said that the Reserve Bank has estimated the inflation rate to be 4.5% in the financial year 2024-25 and 4.1% in the financial year 2025-26.
