INSV Kaundinya, a ship built with 2000 year old technology based on the paintings found in the caves of Ajanta, will leave from Porbandar for Oman at the end of December. This ship made of wooden planks has been stitched with coconut ropes, nails have not been used anywhere in it.
The ship has neither an engine nor a GPS. It is fitted with square cotton sails and paddles. It will run entirely with the help of wind and cloth sails. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will flag it off.

Sailors’ months of preparation
This ship, which reflects the thousands of years old maritime trade history of India, has been named after the great sailor ‘Kaundinya’. Today no one has practical experience in running this type of ship.
For this reason, its crew members have been taking special training for the last several months.
Recognition of India’s traditional skills in shipbuilding The central government had approved this project in the year 2023 with the aim of bringing India’s ancient shipbuilding skills to the world.
A Goa company has built this ship using the nearly 2000 year old stitching method.
