The final voter list was released in Uttar Pradesh on Friday under the second phase of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Election Commission. After its completion, a total of 6.08 crore names have been reduced in the voter lists of 9 states and 3 union territories. Before the SIR process started on October 27 last year, the total number of voters in 12 states and union territories was around 51 crore. After the release of the final list, this number has come down to 44.92 crores. In the second phase of SIR, the final voter list of Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Goa including Puducherry, Andaman-Nicobar, Lakshadweep has been published. In the final list of SIR released on Friday in UP, the number of voters has decreased by 13% to 13.39 crore. That means 2.04 crore names have been cut from the list. Whereas in West Bengal, names of about 91 lakh voters have been left out of the final list. Till now 60 crore voters covered, 39 crore remaining. Election Commission had ordered to conduct SIR in the entire country on 24 June 2025. So far 10 states and 3 union territories have been covered. In the first phase of SIR, SIR was conducted in Bihar. Whereas in Assam, instead of SIR, special revision was completed on 10 February. There were frequent changes in the schedule in many states throughout this process. Like Bihar, political parties in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal have also approached the Supreme Court challenging this process. Out of approximately 99 crore voters in the country, 60 crore have been included in this campaign. Now the remaining 39 crore voters will be covered in the third phase of SIR in 17 states and 5 union territories. The SIR process in these 22 state-UTs will be started after the five assembly elections this month. 90.83 lakh names removed after SIR in election state Bengal. In West Bengal, about 91 lakh names have been removed from the voter list during SIR. According to the Election Commission, this action has been taken as part of the ongoing process since November. According to the Commission’s data till February 28, 63.66 lakh names were removed after the launch of SIR, due to which the number of voters reduced from about 7.66 crore to 7.04 crore. What is the purpose of SIR? SIR from 1951 to 2004 has been completed, but is pending for the last 21 years. In this long period, many changes are necessary in the voter list. Like migration of people, name being in voter list at two places. Name remains even after death. Removal of foreign nationals once their names appear in the list. No eligible voter should be left out in the list and no ineligible voter should be included in the list.
