In a city where monthly utility bills often slip into the background until they pile up, thousands of households and businesses in Bengaluru are currently sitting on unpaid water dues. Now, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has introduced a limited-time window that could significantly reduce the burden.

The BWSSB has rolled out a one-time settlement scheme allowing consumers to clear pending water bills without paying the accumulated interest. Under this plan, customers who pay the full principal amount of their dues will receive a complete waiver on the interest component.

The scheme will remain in effect for a 3-month period from April to June 2026, giving defaulters a defined window to settle their accounts.

Over 5.1 Lakh Consumers Have Pending Dues

Official data shows that Bengaluru has around 11 lakh water connections, of which nearly 5.1 lakh consumers currently have outstanding bills.

As of February 2026, the total pending amount stands at approximately Rs 851.3 crore. This includes Rs 539.4 crore as the principal amount and Rs 311.9 crore as accumulated interest. The waiver applies only to the interest portion, provided the principal is cleared within the scheme period.

The scheme is applicable across all consumer categories. This includes domestic households, commercial establishments and industrial users.

However, dues related to government departments will not fall under this scheme and will instead be addressed through separate reconciliation processes.

How to Check and Pay Your Dues

BWSSB will provide detailed information to defaulters, including their RR number, principal amount, interest eligible for waiver and the final payable amount.

Consumers can clear their dues through multiple payment options. These include BWSSB kiosks, the official online portal and other digital payment platforms, making it easier to complete the process within the deadline.

For many households and small businesses, accumulated interest can significantly increase the total payable amount over time. By removing this component, the scheme offers a chance to reset dues at a lower cost.

BWSSB officials have urged consumers to make use of this window and clear pending bills within the deadline, as the benefit is time-bound.

With a large number of connections currently in arrears, this scheme is expected to not only ease the burden on consumers but also help improve revenue recovery for the city’s water utility system.
