English captain Ben Stokes is out of the entire summer season due to a hamstring injury. He will not be a part of the Test series against Sri Lanka. Vice-captain Ollie Pope will captain the English team in his place.
The ECB informed on Tuesday night that 33-year-old Stokes has a hamstring strain. The scan on Tuesday revealed that he cannot take part in the 3-Test series against Sri Lanka. He is expected to return in the Test series against Pakistan. This series will start from October 7.
England will host Sri Lanka in the first Test at Emirates Old Trafford from August 21 to 25. Then there will be matches at Lord’s and Oval.

Stokes was injured in The Hundred League
Stokes was injured on Sunday while playing for Northern Superchargers in The Hundred League against Manchester Originals at Old Trafford. He stopped abruptly after taking a run and had to be taken off the field.

Won the series 3-0 against West Indies
Stokes decided to stay out of the Indian Premier League and the T20 World Cup to recover from a knee injury. Then he took five wickets in three Tests against the West Indies at an average of 34.20, helping England win the series 3–0 over the West Indies. He played three times for the Northern Superchargers during The Hundred, scoring just four runs and taking no wickets.

Crawley and Pennington also out due to injury
Opener Jack Crawley has already been ruled out of this series due to a broken finger. Dan Lawrence has been included in the team along with Ben Duckett in his place. Uncapped pacer Dillon Pennington has also been injured while playing for Northern Superchargers in The Hundred. He will also be ruled out of the Sri Lanka Test due to a hamstring injury. Essex batsman Jordan Cox has been included in the Test team for the first time, while Nottinghamshire fast bowler Ollie Stone has also returned.

Sri Lanka appoints Ian Bell as batting coach

Sri Lanka has appointed former English batsman Ian Bell as batting coach for the England tour starting on August 21. He will remain with the team till the end of the tour.
