During the hearing of a petition on Friday (March 13), the Supreme Court said, Do you want us to run the entire country? The petition had sought comprehensive instructions to ensure the safety of the public by properly maintaining roads, bridges and electric wires etc. in the country. The court rejected the petition.
The bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said that this petition is like a shopping mall, in which every kind of demand has been placed.
The bench said that it is almost impossible to pass such blanket orders unless the issues raised are clear and specific. Therefore we will not hear this petition.

However, the court said that if the petitioner wishes, he can approach the concerned High Court by making a new petition in a proper manner.
The Supreme Court also made it clear that it is not commenting on the actual merits of the case.
The CJI told the petitioner’s lawyer that you are asking for very broad instructions.
The court said that these instructions will affect the finances of the states, hence the High Court is more suitable to understand the situation of the states.
The petitioner’s lawyer said that people are losing their lives across the country due to government negligence.
Every type of demand in the petition
The petition sought directions to the central government and officials to:
- Regularly inspect and repair public facilities such as roads, bridges and power lines
- Create a high-level independent security audit committee
- This committee should include civil engineers, infrastructure experts, forensic investigators and representatives of social organizations.
- This committee should conduct regular safety checks of public infrastructure in cities and semi-urban areas.
- Data of infrastructure related deaths from 2020 till now should be collected and made public in digital form.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that the time has come to implement Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country. It is the job of Parliament rather than the court to decide on this.
