Congress on Tuesday released its first list of 42 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. Assam Congress president and MP Gaurav Gogoi will contest from Jorhat assembly seat.
The party said that the candidates have been selected after discussions with all the leaders and they will contest the elections strongly in the state. Candidates for the remaining seats will also be announced in the coming days.
Assam Assembly elections may be held in the first week of April. The Election Commission can announce this by March 8. According to media reports, there is a possibility of voting for all 126 seats in one or maximum two phases.
On February 17, small and big political parties of the state including BJP and Congress have put forward this demand in the meeting with the Election Commission. The parties have appealed to keep the election date around the Bihu festival so that more and more people can vote.

BJP formed government in 2021
The tenure of the 126-member Assam Assembly ends on May 20. There is a BJP government in the state under the leadership of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma for 10 years. The party is claiming victory for the third time.
This time BJP has set a target of winning 100+ seats out of 126. PM Modi has visited the state 4 times in 6 months. Congress has formed an alliance with 10 parties to stop BJP. It includes leftist and regional parties.

February 10: Final voter list released after SIR
The Election Commission released the final voter list under the Special Revision (SR) 2026 held in Assam on February 10. According to EC, more than 2.43 lakh names have been removed from the draft voter list. Now a total of 2,49,58,139 voters are registered in the state.
The number of voters in the draft voter list was 2,52,01,624. After the special revision process, 2,43,485 names have been removed from the list. Now the final list includes 1,24,82,213 men, 1,24,75,583 women and 343 third-gender.
The integrated draft voter list of the special revision was published on 27 December 2025. The time to make claims and objections on this was from 27 December 2025 to 22 January 2026. The door-to-door (H2H) verification campaign was conducted across the state from 22 November to 20 December 2025. Elections are to be held on 126 assembly seats of Assam in the next three months.

Names of 10.56 people were deleted from the draft roll.
Earlier, the draft roll of voter list was released on 27 December 2025. In this, names of 10,56,291 people were removed from the voter list. More than 93,021 thousand D-voters i.e. doubtful voters were not included in these. Names of 10.56 lakh people were removed from the voter list due to death, shifting to a new place or duplicate entries.
D-Voters are those people whose citizenship the government doubts. Such people are not allowed to vote. They are sent to a special tribunal under the Foreigners Act, 1946 and are not even given voter cards. The information of these D-voters has been added separately to the draft voter list.
