According to a survey by Angus Reid Institute (ARI) and Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, today only 26% people in Canada have a positive view of India.

In the survey, 39% Canadians believed that relations with India will not improve as long as Justin Trudeau is the Prime Minister of Canada. 34% people also think the same about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to the survey, 39% of Canadians believe that the Trudeau government could not manage relations with India well, while 32% people were of the opposite opinion. 29% people had no clear opinion about this.

Canada still prefers India over Russia and China

20 months ago, 52% of Canadians said that Ottawa and New Delhi should maintain friendly relations with each other as essential partners. However, now the number of these people has come down to only 24%.

The survey also revealed that in Canada, India is still viewed in a more positive light than Russia and China. However, their trust in New Delhi is only 28%.

Parliamentary elections are going to be held in Canada in 2025 and the opposition Conservative Party is considered a strong contender for victory. According to people, if the Conservative Party wins, Pierre Poilievre will be the Prime Minister of Canada, which will provide an opportunity to improve bilateral relations again.

Pierre Poilievre is being considered as the main contender for the post of PM in the elections to be held in Canada next year.

64% people are in favor of resuming dialogue with India

Despite strained relations, 64% of Canadians believe that the country should try to start a business dialogue with India again. The main reason behind this thinking of people is Trump’s threat to impose 25% tariff on Canadian exports.
