Amid increasing pressure on global energy supply due to the ongoing war in West Asia and closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, the Government of India held a joint press conference of various ministries for the third consecutive day on Friday. The government said that there is no shortage of petrol and diesel in the country but due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, LPG has become a matter of concern for us. The government said that due to the Iran war, the number of gas bookings in the country has increased by about 20 lakh. On behalf of the government, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing and Oil Refinery) of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said that before the war, an average of 55.7 lakh cylinders were booked every day. Currently around 75.7 lakh gas bookings are being done in a day. The government said that amid the war situation, a sudden increase in booking of LPG cylinders has been seen. This is happening due to panic among the people. Government said – LPG distributors still have gas stock. Petroleum Ministry said – LPG is a matter of concern because most of the country’s LPG comes from the Strait of Hormuz and it is currently closed. However, there have been no reports of gas running out (dry out) at any of our 25,000 LPG distributors. The ministry further said- Additional 48,000 kiloliter kerosene has been allocated to the states by the Centre. An appeal has been made to the states to decide the places for distributing kerosene in the districts. For alternative fuel options, Coal India has been instructed to provide coal to small, medium and other consumers. The government said that there is no need to do panic booking of LPG, because the situation of running out of gas has not been reported at any LPG dealer. Under the Natural Gas Order issued on March 9, 2026, many sectors have been given priority. According to the same order, the supply of domestic PNG and CNG continues without any cut. Petroleum Ministry said – There is no need for people to panic. Petroleum Ministry further said – In the current situation, there is no need for people to panic at all. Apart from this, the Government of India is making every possible effort to solve the problems of commercial consumers in big cities and centers who are currently facing some problems due to their dependence on LPG supply. According to the government, India has a refining capacity of 258 million metric tons of crude oil. All refineries are currently operating at 100% or more capacity.
