Ranil Wickremesinghe became the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka for the first time in 1993.

A total of 39 candidates will contest the presidential election to be held on September 21 in Sri Lanka. These include the current President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Wickremesinghe had announced to contest the election during a rally in Galle on July 27 last month.

After the nomination was accepted, Wickremesinghe said that we have to stabilize the country’s economy. Apart from Wickremesinghe, two Buddhist monks and three Tamil minorities are also among those who filed nominations. However, no woman is a candidate in the presidential election.

Today was the last day to file nominations. The time given for this was from 9 am to 11 am. For the first time in the history of Sri Lanka, such a large number of candidates are participating in the presidential election. Earlier, 35 candidates participated in the presidential election held in 2019.

The total population of Sri Lanka is 22 million. Out of these, 17 million people will vote in the presidential elections to be held in September.

Four main candidates compete for the presidency
There are four main candidates for the post of President in Sri Lanka. Among them, the current President Ranil Wickremesinghe is the biggest contender. Wickremesinghe is facing the biggest challenge from 57-year-old Sajith Premadasa. Premadasa is the leader of the opposition in the Sri Lankan Parliament.

Apart from these, leftist leader Anura Kumara Disanayaka is also leading in the presidential race. Anura’s National People’s Party alliance is very popular among the youth of Sri Lanka. The fourth name was added to this triangular contest last week.

The Rajapaksa family, which has considerable influence in Sri Lankan politics, has fielded Namal Rajapaksa in the presidential race. Namal is the son of former President and Prime Minister Mahindra Rajapaksa and nephew of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Until last week, the Rajapaksa family was in support of Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Ranil Wickremesinghe is contesting the election as an independent
Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to contest the upcoming presidential election as an independent candidate. He has resigned from Sri Lanka’s right-wing party United Nationalist Party. Wickremesinghe is expected to get a lot of support as an independent candidate.

Earlier, Gotabaya Rajapaksa won the presidential election held in November 2019. However, Gotabaya had to leave the post of President in 2022 and the Parliament made Wickremesinghe the acting President. Since then Ranil Wickremesinghe was working as the President of the country. Now elections are being held in the country after 2 years.
