The Sri Lankan MP criticized the government in Parliament.

Sri Lankan MP Harsha D. Silva has supported India after imposing 50% tariffs. During the debate on the increased tension in Indo-US on the trade issue, Harsha in the Parliament of Sri Lanka said that our government is joking rather than standing with India.

Harsha said- ‘Don’t make fun of India. When we were in trouble, only India helped us. The game is not over yet. India hoped that the tariff would be reduced by 15%, and we expected the same.

He repeated his point on the social media platform x and wrote, ‘I lashed the government to make fun of India. India is our true friend, who supported us in our most difficult time. We should respect his struggle, not mocking him. India’s courage inspires the whole of Asia. ‘

India helped Sri Lanka during economic crisis

Sri Lanka was struggling with poor economic crisis in 2022. Foreign exchange near Sri Lanka was over, due to which he was unable to import essential items like fuel, medicines, and food.

During this time India supported Sri Lanka. India provided financial assistance of about $ 5 billion to Sri Lanka, including 3.3 tonnes of medical materials such as medicines and essential medical goods.

In addition, India swaps a $ 400 million currency, so that Sri Lanka would immediately get relief from lack of money. India also gave a loan of $ 3.1 billion, so that Sri Lanka could buy essential items like food, fuel and medicines. Also, India also gave grants and goods for petroleum, trains, buses and infrastructure projects.

20% tariff on Sri Lanka

The US has imposed a 20% tariff on Sri Lanka goods, which has come into force from 7 August 2025. The first 44% tariff was announced in April 2025, which was later reduced to 30% in July and then on 31 July 2025 by 20%.

The shortage occurred after Sri Lankan business talks and trade and security commitments with the US. This tariff will affect Sri Lankan exports, especially areas such as textiles and rubber, which trade around $ 3 billion annually in the US.

Former American NSA said- Trump’s tariff’s reverse effect

Apart from Sri Lanka, Harsha de Silva, former National Security Advisor of America John Bolton, also denied Trump’s 50% tariff on India. Bolton said on 9 August that India is getting away from America by Trump’s policies.

In an interview to CNN, he described the decision to impose a total of 50% tariff on India as a ‘huge mistake’. Bolton has expressed apprehension that the extra tariff imposed on India to weaken Russia does not turn anywhere.

He said that America was trying for many years to keep India away from Russia and China, but now that effort has weakened.

Former NSA said that the purpose of imposing tariffs on India is to harm Russia, but the result may be that India, Russia and China unite and oppose these tariffs.

Trump said- millions of dollars are coming daily from tariff

Earlier, US President Trump claimed on 1 August that the tariff was increasing a tremendous increase in the stock market and new records are being made every day. Also, hundreds of billion dollars are coming to the country’s vault.

He said on social media Truth Social that if an extremist leftist court ruled against the tariff at this time, it would be difficult to get such a huge amount and respect back.

Trump warned that such a decision can bring a gathering like 1929, which would completely destroy the economy of the country. Trump claimed that he understands the court system best and no one in history went through challenges like him.

China condemns American tariff on India

At the same time, China condemned the American tariff on India. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun on Thursday called it “misuse of tariff”.

Guo said- ‘China is clearly against the misuse of tariffs.’ He further said that America should stop politicizing technical and business issues.

China’s statement came in response to US President Trump’s executive order, which has been imposed 25% extra tariffs on India for purchasing Russian oil.

Earlier, Trump has refused to talk to India on a trade deal. Trump said that the conversation will not begin until the tariff dispute is resolved.

Opposition to Trump’s decision in America too

Earlier, media reports said that a team of American officials is going to come to India this month to talk to India on a trade deal.

Trump has announced to impose 50% tariffs on India so far. He imposed 25% tariff on 30 July, which came into effect from 7 August.

At the same time, on August 6, by signing an executive order, it has increased 25% tariff on India, which will be applicable from August 27.

Trump’s move is also being criticized in America. Democrats of the House Foreign Affairs Committee warned that this step could harm India-US relations. The committee member Gregory Mikes said, “This tariff decision of Trump can weaken strategic and economic relations between Indo-US.”
