Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was presented in New York Federal Court on Monday night. He denied all the allegations related to drugs and arms smuggling made against him in the court.

According to CNN, Maduro described his arrest in court as illegal and said that he had been kidnapped. At the first hearing, Maduro pleaded innocent and said,

Maduro’s lawyers have described the US action as a military kidnapping. He said that this is a violation of international law and legal process. The next hearing will be on March 17.

The defense parties are also preparing to challenge the jurisdiction of the US courts. The main basis of their legal strategy will be that American agencies took illegal action on foreign soil and arrested them.

Maduro’s wife Cilia Flores also appeared

Maduro’s wife Cilia Flores also appeared in court. There were injury marks and a bandage on his face. She described herself as the First Lady of Venezuela and denied all allegations.

Maduro and his associates are accused of conspiring with drug smugglers and terrorist gangs to deliver cocaine to America. Maduro is also accused of possessing a machine gun, which could carry a long sentence.

The charge sheet also includes the names of Maduro’s son Nicolas Maduro Guerra, Home Minister Diosdado Cabello and notorious gang leader ‘Tren de Aragua’ Hector Guerrero Flores. America considers this gang as a foreign terrorist organization.

Maduro had shackles on his feet

Maduro’s feet were shackled during the hearing. He and his wife were sitting at the same table and both had worn headphones so that they could understand what was being said in the court in their own language. The judge read out the charges against both of them in the court.

Earlier, a helicopter carrying Maduro was landed at the helipad near the court. As soon as he got off the helicopter, he was immediately seated in a van and taken directly to the court from there.

Maduro was captured on January 2

US troops invaded Venezuela on the night of January 2 and captured Maduro and his wife Celia Flores. After this he was brought to New York, where he was kept in the detention center.

They are to be prosecuted in arms and drugs related cases. Maduro has denied any connection to drug trafficking.
