Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was arrested by the Federal Police on Saturday morning on the orders of the Supreme Court. The court took this action when only a few days were left for his 27 years and 3 months jail sentence to begin.
Judge Alexandre de Morais said there was clear evidence that Bolsonaro had planned to abscond just before his sentence began. According to the court, during his house arrest since July, the signal of the electronic ankle monitor fitted on his leg suddenly disappeared.
Investigation revealed that the device had been tampered with and efforts were made to remove it. The court considered this to be part of the escape plan. Due to this apprehension, the Supreme Court ordered his immediate arrest and asked him to be transferred to the Federal Police Headquarters in Brasília.
Bolsonaro was earlier convicted of coup conspiracy by the Brazilian Supreme Court. According to the allegations, they got fake documents prepared and tried to put pressure on the military leadership to overturn the 2022 election results and remain in power.
The court said in its decision that Bolsonaro was leading a “criminal organization” whose aim was to weaken the country’s democratic system.
The former President’s legal team has been continuously claiming that his health is bad and he should not be sent to jail, but the Supreme Court rejected their appeal. Bolsonaro’s supporters are describing this action as political revenge, while the court says that the decision has been taken only on the basis of evidence.
