A massive explosion occurred in a mosque during evening prayers in Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria’s Borno state, on Wednesday, in which several people were reported dead. According to media reports, this could be a bomb explosion. However, no armed group has yet claimed responsibility for this attack.

Maiduguri is the capital of Borno state and the region has long been the epicenter of violence from Boko Haram and its offshoot Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). However, there had been no major attacks in the city in the last few years. Security forces are investigating the matter and vigilance has been increased in the area.
