South Korean rescue workers recovered 10 bodies from the charred wreckage of an auto parts factory in the central city of Daejeon on Saturday. The factory fire was apparently caused by an explosion, injuring at least 59 others and leaving four missing. The Interior and Security Ministries said 25 people were seriously injured, but officials did not immediately confirm whether any of them were life-threatening. After the fire broke out on Friday afternoon, more than 500 firefighters, police and emergency personnel were deployed to control the fire and carry out rescue operations. Smoke was visible rising from the factory premises in the videos and pictures obtained from the incident site. Nam Deuk-woo, fire chief of the city’s Daedeok district, said the fire completely destroyed a factory building. Firefighters were initially unable to enter the building due to fear of it collapsing. The search for the missing employees was started late Friday night. Nam said the fire was reported at around 1:18 pm. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but it appears that the fire spread very quickly. Eyewitnesses said that they had heard an explosion.
