When the ash of Ethiopia’s volcano started moving in the east direction yesterday, it created a serious situation in India, because if the ash particles hit the planes, there was a possibility of an accident in the air. Volcanic ash was rising up to 45,000 feet, while planes flew below it. India was facing such a situation for the first time, hence the government activated the Real Time Volcanic Ash Response Protocol.
In this, Air Traffic Control, Meteorological Department, Airlines and international aviation agencies started working together under the supervision of the Aviation Ministry.
First of all, Airport Authority of India alerted the airlines by issuing NOTAM (Notice to Air Mission). Then micro descent model was applied. In this, some planes were flown 2 to 4 thousand feet below their minimum flying altitude.
The risk of ash particles in high altitude air was checked every hour in the flight information regions located in Delhi and Mumbai. For this, IMD’s lidar scan, Volcanic Ash Advisory Center and air speed forecasts were analyzed every 30 minutes. Updates were sent to the planes every 90 minutes, only then the situation came under control.
What is micro descent model? In this, altitude is changed to take the aircraft away from the ash-layer. Its basis is a scientific risk map.
Such situations had arisen twice before. For the first time, it was a British Airways flight BA-9 that had all four engines shut down due to ash-ingestion. The second, KLM-867, had engine damage.
Both aircraft were damaged by ash from the Mount Etna eruptions in Iceland and Europe. After this, the world considered volcanic ash as an ‘invisible hazard’ and made strict protocols.
