A landslide has occurred in the Rubaya Coltan mine in the eastern part of the African country Republic of Congo, killing more than 200 people. According to local officials, the accident occurred on Wednesday when the ground weakened during the rainy season and the mine collapsed.
Governor’s spokesman Lubumba Kambere Muyisa told Reuters that more than 200 people were killed in the landslide, including miners, children and women selling vegetables and fruits in the market.
However, the exact number of dead was not clear till Friday evening, as work to remove bodies from the debris was ongoing.
