The Russian-built warship INS Tushil for the Indian Navy was commissioned in the Russian coastal city of Kaliningrad on Monday (9 December 2024).

Modern multi-role stealth-guided missile frigate ‘INS Tushil’ was commissioned into the Indian Navy on Monday. According to the news agency, this warship was delivered to India in the presence of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Admiral Dinesh Tripathi in the Russian coastal city of Kaliningrad.

INS Tushil is equipped with many advanced weapons. These include BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, high range surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft gun. Apart from this, this warship also has many advanced rockets including controlled close-range rapid fire gun system, submarine-killing torpedoes. The design of the warship gives it radar evasion capability and better stability.

In 2016, a deal worth $2.5 billion (about Rs 21 thousand crore) was signed between India and Russia for 4 stealth frigates. Out of these, 2 warships are to be built in Russia (Yantar Shipyard) and 2 in Goa Shipyard. After delivery of Tushil, Russia will hand over Tamal to India in June-July 2025.

The Defense Minister said that INS Tushil will increase India’s maritime power. He described it as a milestone in the successful partnership of Russian and Indian industries and the long-standing friendship between the two countries. The Defense Minister also expressed happiness over the increase in ‘Made in India’ content in the ships.

Increase in ‘Made in India’ content in foreign ships With the help of expert engineers from the Indian Navy and Russian ship design company Severnoye Design Bureau, the indigenous content in INS Tushil has been increased to 26 per cent. With this, the number of Indian-made systems in foreign ships has increased to 33, which is more than double than before.

Major Indian companies involved in the construction of this ship were BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited, Bharat Electronics Limited, Keltron, Nova Integrated Systems, Elcom Marine, Johnson Controls India and many other original equipment manufacturers.

It is noteworthy that the gas turbines used in most of the ships used in the Indian Navy are produced by the Ukrainian company Zorya-Mashproekt. It is known for the production of hydrogas turbines globally. The biggest thing about this entire order is that despite the war, India has got this ship with the help of Russia and Ukraine.

A crew of 180 personnel including 18 officers can be deployed on INS Tushil. The ship is armed with 8 BrahMos vertically launched anti-ship cruise missiles, 24 medium-range and 8 short-range surface-to-air missiles, one 100 mm cannon and two close-in missiles to protect against incoming missiles. There will be weapons.

Tushil is a Crovac-3 category warship. There are currently 6 such warships in service in India.
