Prisoner exchange is taking place in Turkey’s capital Ankara between 7 countries including America and Russia.

Prisoners will be exchanged between America and Russia today. Turkey is brokering this deal between Russia, America and Western countries. Under the deal, 24 prisoners imprisoned in jails of 7 countries including America, Russia and Germany will be released.

US President Joe Biden has approved this deal. This is the third deal related to the exchange of prisoners between the US and Russia in the last 3 years. Earlier, prisoners were exchanged between the two countries in April 2022 and December 2022.

This is believed to be the biggest exchange since the Cold War.

American journalist and Navy sailor released
Ivan Gershkovich, a journalist of the American media house WALL STREET JOURNAL (WSJ), has been released by Russia today. Russia had arrested Ivan in March last year on charges of spying for the American intelligence agency CIA.

Last month on July 19, he was convicted of espionage. After this, Ivan was sentenced to 16 years of imprisonment. Ivan had gone to the eastern city of Yekaterinburg, 1600 km away from the Russian capital Moscow, for reporting.

Apart from Ivan, two more American citizens will be released from Russia. These include Paul Whelan, a former US Navy officer, and radio journalist Alsou Kurmasheva. Paul Whelan was arrested by Russia from a hotel in Moscow in 2018 for spying.

Meanwhile, radio journalist Alsou was arrested for spreading fake news about the Russian army.

Eight Russian citizens to return to their country​​
A total of 8 Russian prisoners are being released in the prisoner exchange. Many of these people are associated with Russia’s intelligence agency FSB. One of these Russian citizens named Vadim Krasikov has been brought to Ankara from Berlin, the capital of Germany. Vadim had shot an enemy of Russia in Berlin in 2019.

After this he was arrested. Apart from this, 3 Russian prisoners lodged in US jail have also been sent for release.
