After the killing of many of its top officials in the Gaza war, Hamas is preparing to hold internal elections to strengthen its organization. A leader associated with Hamas told news agency AFP that preparations are underway. Elections will be held as soon as the ground situation improves.

According to the official, these elections are expected to be held in a few days. According to the report, now Khalid Mashal’s name is in the forefront to become Hamas Chief. Israel poisoned him to kill, but this damaged its relations with Jordan. Israel was forced to save him.

Khaled Mashal became the Political Bureau Chief of Hamas in 1996 and remained its head till 2017.

Hamas Chief’s chair vacant for 15 months

After the start of the Israel war in October 2023, 2 chiefs of Hamas have been killed. Israel assassinated Ismail Haniya in Tehran in July 2024. After this, Yahya Sinwar was made Hamas Chief in August, but two months later in October, Sinwar was killed during a shootout in Rafah city.

After Sinwar was killed, no one was made chief of Hamas. According to media reports, no one was made chief due to difficulties in elections in the war situation. It was also believed that if a new chief was made, Israel could target him.

After this, Hamas formed an interim leadership committee consisting of five members based in Qatar. So that the responsibility remains divided and the entire threat does not fall on any one person. This committee has been taking decisions related to Hamas for the last 15 months.

Hamas has not publicly announced all the names of its 5-member interim. However, according to different reports and sources associated with Hamas, the five people include Alil al-Hayya, Khaled Mashal, Musa Abu Marzook, Zaheer Jabarin and Nizar Awadallah.

New Shura Council of 50 people will elect

According to the report, Hamas will form a new Shura Council of 50 people to choose the new leadership of its organization. Shura Council means advisory committee. There are senior leaders in it.

The members of this council are elected every four years. These elections are conducted by Hamas units present in three places… 1. Gaza Strip, 2. West Bank and 3. Hamas leadership present abroad.

Israeli prisoners will also vote

Hamas prisoners in Israeli jails can also vote in these elections. Prisoners in Israeli prisons do not openly cast ballot papers. They send the names of their favorite candidates through their lawyers or relatives.

In previous elections before the Gaza war, members of Gaza and the West Bank gathered at various places, including mosques, to elect the Shura Council. The same Shura Council elects the 18-member Political Bureau and the Hamas chief every four years.

Another Hamas source close to the process told AFP that given the current situation, the timing of elections for the Political Bureau has not yet been decided, “because our people are going through extremely difficult circumstances.”

Khalid is the biggest contender to become Mashal Chief.

Khalid Mashal’s claim is considered very strong. He advocates on behalf of Hamas in the ongoing peace talks with Israel. He has never lived in Gaza. He was born in 1956 in the West Bank.

When Hamas was formed in 1987, Mashal was also included in it. Then he was living in Kuwait. Later he also lived in Jordan, Syria and Qatar. He became the political chief of Hamas in 1996 and remained in this position till 2017.

According to the report, during his tenure, Hamas became stronger as a political-military organization. After this Haniyeh took his place. Mashal is currently living in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

Mashal is the big face of Hamas’ foreign policy. He is said to have a charismatic personality. He is an expert in diplomacy. Many senior Hamas leaders are subject to travel restrictions, but Mashal faces fewer restrictions because he lives abroad.

Israel gave poison and then saved itself, got the name – Zinda Shaheed

The world first realized the power of the torch in 1997. The torch remained in Jordan. During this time he was poisoned. Those who administered the poison were Mossad agents. He was caught while fleeing and it was then that it was revealed that Israel was involved in this incident.

Meanwhile, Mashal was taken to the hospital. His breathing was slowing down. The doctors raised their hands. He said that if the antidote of poison is not found as soon as possible, Mashal’s life will not be saved.

After this, Jordan’s King Hussein threatened Israel that if the antidote for that poison was not sent before midnight, he would break the peace agreement with Israel. Not only this, the Mossad agents who gave poison will be hanged.

At first Israel refused to have any involvement in this matter, but when US President Bill Clinton himself explained to Netanyahu, he was forced to send an antidote. Mashal survived. This was the first time that Israel saved one of its enemies from death. Since then his name became ‘Zinda Shaheed’.

Khalil al-Hayya – wants nothing but war with Israel

After Mashal, Khalil al-Hayya is also a big contender for the post of Hamas Chief. He previously served as deputy to Hamas Chief Haniyeh. Al-Hayya has never been in favor of good relations with Israel. He believes that the problem of Palestine can be solved only by defeating Israel.

Al-Hayya is known for taking firm and balanced measures. His leadership is praised. Al-Hayya has good relations with Iran, Türkiye, Syria, Qatar and Egypt.

According to Reuters report, Khalil al-Hayya has been one of the organization’s key faces in the Gaza ceasefire, prisoner exchange and negotiations with mediating countries.

A Hamas member based in Gaza told AFP that Khalil al-Hayya also has good relations with other Palestinian factions. Because of this his claim is also very strong. Al-Hayya also has the support of the Shura Council and the Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s military wing.

When there is a ceasefire or negotiations between Israel and Hamas, Khalil al-Hayya often takes the side of Hamas.
