India will replace India in place of PM Modi at the Virtual Summit of BRICS leaders on 8 September, called by Brazilian President Lula Dr. Silva. Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal issued a statement on Friday and informed about this.
He said- Foreign Minister will participate in it from India. This conference will discuss promoting methods and multilateral cooperation to deal with the US tariffs. Brazil is not presenting it as an anti -US summit.
However, according to experts, Modi’s absence shows that India is taking precautions before the 2026 BRICS Summit. Earlier, America has demanded to leave BRICS instead of withdrawing tariffs to India.
US Industries Minister said- India will have to leave BRICS
At the same time, US Industries Minister Howard Lutnik on Friday spoke to Bloomberg TV and laid three conditions to remove 25% extra tariffs on India.
He said that India will have to stop buying oil from Russia, separate from BRICS and support America.
He said that if you (India) want to become a bridge between Russia and China, then be made, but either dollar or support America. Support your biggest customer or repay 50% tariffs.
However, he also hoped that India would soon be involved in a bilateral trade agreement conversation with the US. He said that America is always ready for talks.
Lutynik said- India will apologize in a month or two
Lutnik also said that there is a commercial tension between India and America, but soon India will come to the table of conversation with President Trump, apologizing.
He said that in a month or two, India will come to the conversation table with Trump and apologize. According to Lutnik, India will try to make a new deal with Trump. The deal will be on Trump’s terms and will finalize it with Prime Minister Modi.
Why does America want India to leave BRICS?
The US has an important reason to express his desire to leave BRICS from India.
- India’s proximity with Russia and China: The US feels that India’s presence in BRICS enhances the influence of Russia and China, which is considered anti -America.
- Objection to purchase of Russian oil: India started buying cheaper oil from Russia after the Ukraine crisis, which was the first 2% and has now reached 40%. America considers it wrong and wants India not to buy Russian oil, as it strengthens Russia’s economy.
- Tariff threatening: The US has imposed 50% tariff on India. Lutnik said that if India lives in BRICS, it will have to face heavy tariffs. They believe that India depends on the American market (which is India’s largest customer), so it will soon compromise with the US.
- Fear of de-dollarization: The US is worried that BRICS countries can challenge the dollar in the global financial system. The US wants India to be separated from any such efforts.
- India’s strategic edge: India wants to maintain balance with both BRICS and America under its independent foreign policy. But the US feels that India’s living in BRICS is against the growing partnership with its western countries, especially America,.
India has repeatedly stated that it considers BRICS a platform to strengthen the voice of the global South, not the anti-America group. India has rejected de-dollars and termed its relations with the US as important. India does not support any plan to leave BRICS.
India will preside over BRICS in 2026
India will preside over the BRICS Summit in 2026 and will hold the 18th BRICS Summit. India will get this responsibility from Brazil from January 1, 2026.
Modi shared India’s plan at the 17th BRICS Summit held at Rio de Janeiro in 2025. India aims to introduce BRICS in a new form, which will focus:
- Humanity first (humanity): India will make BRICs a platform to prioritize the interests of the people, as he chaired by the G20.
- Resilience and innovation: India will emphasize new techniques and cooperation to deal with global challenges.
- Continuous development (sustainability): Issues such as climate change, environmental protection and global health will be noted.
- The voice of Global South: India will promote the interests of developing countries and demand improvement in global institutions such as United Nations Security Council, IMF and World Bank.
- Anti -terrorism and economic strength: India will insist on strengthening steps and economic cooperation against terrorism.

Modi went to Brazil to attend the 17th BRICS Summit
The 17th BRICS Summit was held on 6-7 July 2025 at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The theme of this summit under the chairmanship of Brazilian President Luiz Eneasio Lula Dr. Silva was ‘Inclusive and sustainable cooperation for Global South’.
It included BRICS member countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, UAE) and leaders of partner countries. Modi went to Brazil to participate in it. This was the 12th when Modi is participating in the BRICS Summit.
The Prime Minister had said, ‘Global South countries have often been victims of double standard. Whether it is development, resources, or security related issues, Global South has never been given priority. Without them, global institutions are like mobiles that have SIM cards but do not have a network.

PM Modi, Brazilian President Lula de Silva and leaders of BRICS countries took group photographs.
What is BRICS?
BRICS is a group of countries with 11 major emerging economies. These include Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia and Indonesia.
Its purpose is to promote economic, political and social cooperation among these countries. It initially had 4 countries, called BRIC. The name was given in 2001 by Jim O’Neel, an economist of Goldman Sachs.
He then said that Brazil, Russia, India and China will carry forward the global economy in the coming decades. Later these countries came together and adopted this name.
Need to make BRICS and travel ahead
Western countries dominated the world’s economy after the fall of the Soviet Union and in the early 2000s. America’s dollars and international institutions such as International Monetary Fund (IMF) made decisions.
Russia, India, China and Brazil came together to reduce this American dominance, which later became BRICS. The purpose of these countries was to strengthen the voice of global South i.e. developing and poor countries.
